Riyadh Municipality's efforts to deal with Riyadh's rains: 9,000 personnel and equipment

Full mobilization to deal with heavy rains in Riyadh

In a move reflecting its high level of preparedness and rapid response, the Riyadh Municipality has begun implementing its comprehensive field operational plan to address rains in the capital. This strategic plan aims to enhance the efficiency of immediate response and address water accumulation in various sectors and neighborhoods of the city, ensuring the continuity of daily life without disruption and providing a safe environment for residents.

The climatic and historical context of the city of Riyadh

The Saudi capital, Riyadh, is characterized by a desert climate, yet it experiences heavy and sudden rainfall during certain seasons. Historically, the Saudi Arabian government has prioritized the development of Riyadh's infrastructure, investing heavily over the past decades in constructing and expanding stormwater drainage networks and mitigating their risks. These strategic projects have transformed the capital into a city capable of adapting to climate change and reducing the negative impacts of past rainfall, reflecting significant advancements in urban planning and crisis management.

A precise distribution of 9,000 individuals and more than 2,000 vehicles

To ensure complete control of the situation, the Riyadh Municipality deployed its field teams, supported by more than 9,000 trained personnel and approximately 2,149 advanced vehicles and equipment. These forces were deployed according to precise and pre-planned deployment strategies, focusing on the areas most affected by water accumulation. The field teams immediately began their work at several vital locations to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of road users, both citizens and residents.

Comprehensive field treatment and joint coordination

The intensive field work included operating advanced dewatering equipment and efficiently addressing water accumulation sites. In addition, monitoring of the stormwater drainage network was intensified, ensuring its readiness to the highest level. The municipality focused on guaranteeing smooth traffic flow in tunnels, bridges, and along the city's main thoroughfares. To achieve the highest levels of safety, direct and continuous coordination was maintained with relevant authorities, such as the General Directorate of Traffic and the General Directorate of Civil Defense, to support traffic management when needed and guide drivers to safe routes.

The local and national impact of the Secretariat's efforts

These exceptional efforts are of paramount importance both locally and nationally. Locally, they contribute to protecting lives and property and prevent disruption to economic and educational activity in the capital. Nationally, the success of climate crisis management reflects the progress made in achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program, which aims to provide a sustainable and safe urban environment. It also reinforces Riyadh's position as a regional and global capital capable of addressing environmental challenges effectively and efficiently.

Digital interaction and receiving reports

As part of its digital transformation and efforts to facilitate communication with residents, the Riyadh Municipality continues to receive reports and requests related to rainfall through its smart application, “Madinati,” in addition to the unified call center, 940. Rainfall conditions are monitored through an integrated operational system supported by modern technologies, ensuring rapid response and efficient field handling. These concerted efforts aim to enhance operational readiness and improve the efficiency of rainfall management, thereby supporting the continuity of services in line with the Municipality's vision to be a leading municipality for a prosperous and sustainable Riyadh that elevates the quality of life.
