Riyadh and Eastern Province weather: Dust storms, strong winds, and a severe cold wave

The National Center for Meteorology issued a detailed report on the expected weather conditions in the coming hours, warning residents of several regions in Saudi Arabia of significant weather fluctuations. Warnings focused on dust storms and strong winds directly affecting large parts of the Riyadh and Eastern Provinces, urging caution, especially for those traveling on highways.

Weather details for Riyadh and the Eastern Province

The center explained in its alert that the weather conditions, characterized by active surface winds and dust storms, will continue to affect the Al-Aflaj, As-Sulayyil, and Wadi Ad-Dawasir governorates in the Riyadh region until the evening hours, specifically until 9:00 PM. The alert is not limited to the capital and its surrounding areas, but also extends to cities and governorates in the Eastern Province, including Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Dhahran, Qatif, Ras Tanura, Khafji, An-Nairiyah, Qaryat Al-Ulya, Al-Ahsa, and Abqaiq. These conditions will be accompanied by a decrease in horizontal visibility to between 3 and 5 kilometers, which may impede traffic in open areas.

A cold wave is affecting the north and central regions

In connection with the winter weather conditions currently affecting the Kingdom, forecasts indicate the continued dominance of the cold air mass. Cold to very cold weather prevails across large parts of the Tabuk, Al-Jawf, Northern Borders, and Hail regions, with the drop in temperatures extending to Al-Qassim, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province. Such weather is typical for this time of year, as the Kingdom is influenced by Siberian high-pressure systems that bring a noticeable decrease in minimum temperatures, requiring residents to wear heavy winter clothing and ensure adequate heating.

Chance of rain and fog

The forecast wasn't limited to dust and hail; it also included chances of rain. Thunderstorms with rain and strong winds are expected over the highlands of Jazan, Asir, and Al-Baha regions, extending to parts of the Makkah region, and potentially reaching parts of Riyadh and the Eastern Province. The meteorological department also warned of fog formation during the night and early morning hours, which could reduce visibility, especially in the highlands and parts of the Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, and Tabuk regions.

Public safety recommendations

Due to these weather fluctuations, weather experts and relevant authorities advise citizens and residents to follow current weather forecasts and avoid speeding while driving in areas experiencing heavy dust or fog. Those with respiratory conditions and asthma are also advised to avoid direct exposure to dusty air and remain indoors as much as possible to ensure their safety.
