Developing the Zamzam water system in the Grand Mosque for the comfort of pilgrims
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques continues its diligent and ongoing efforts to develop the Zamzam water distribution within the Grand Mosque by enhancing the efficiency of the Zamzam water fountains and expanding the number of service points. This strategic development comes in response to the increasing number of pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah seasons, thus raising the level of operational readiness in areas experiencing high pedestrian traffic.
The historical context and spiritual significance of Zamzam water
Historically, the Zamzam Well holds immense spiritual and religious significance for Muslims worldwide, its history stretching back thousands of years to the time of the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael (peace be upon them). Providing water to pilgrims was a great honor passed down through generations in Mecca. In modern times, since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has given the Zamzam Well considerable attention and care, transitioning from traditional methods to the latest global technologies to ensure the delivery of pure, chilled water to millions of Muslims. This culminates today in monumental projects such as the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Water Project.
Figures and statistics: The current Zamzam water distribution system
The current project is part of a precise operational approach focused on improving the efficiency of Zamzam water distribution and reducing water waste, while ensuring rapid response during peak times. The existing system includes figures that reflect the scale of the effort, including:
- 169 Zamzam water fountains are carefully distributed throughout the Grand Mosque.
- Approximately 14,892 water containers (cold and room temperature) are used daily.
- More than 2,146,000 cups daily to serve worshippers and visitors.
- The average daily consumption of Zamzam water is about 1,622 cubic meters .
- Daily laboratory tests are conducted on 70 samples to ensure the safety and quality of the water according to the highest approved international health standards.
Local and international impact of developing services at the Grand Mosque
Domestically, this development aligns directly with the objectives of the "Guests of God Service Program," one of the key programs of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Hajj and Umrah experience. Regionally and internationally, the efficient crowd management and provision of safe water for millions of visitors from around the world reflect the Kingdom's exceptional capabilities in managing massive gatherings and ensure that pilgrims return to their countries healthy and safe, carrying with them positive memories of the high-quality services provided.
Integrated operational initiatives to reduce congestion
The operational indicators reflect a significant improvement in the management of the Zamzam water distribution system, achieved through demand measurement and analysis of the actual needs of service points. The Authority affirmed that the development of the Zamzam water distribution system is part of a comprehensive package of operational initiatives aimed at enhancing the experience of pilgrims. These new improvements are expected to reduce crowding around water distribution points, facilitate smoother movement within the Grand Mosque, and enhance operational sustainability by minimizing waste and optimizing consumption, thus ensuring the continued provision of high-quality service around the clock.
