The International Football Federation (FIFA) has allowed Belgian national team player Jeremy Doku to use treatment containing corticosteroids during his participation in the 2026 World Cup, despite this substance being included in the list of controlled substances in anti-doping regulations, after he obtained an official medical exemption.

The approval came after the Manchester City winger experienced severe health complications during the tournament, as Doku revealed on his YouTube channel that he suffered from a severe respiratory infection that affected his ability to move and breathe, reaching a point where he had to be hospitalized.

The Belgian player explained that he faced significant difficulty in breathing, noting that he began coughing up blood before being taken to a hospital in Seattle following his national team’s opening match against Egypt.

According to the Belgian newspaper “La Dernière Heure,” medical tests showed the presence of fluids in the player’s lungs, prompting doctors to prescribe treatment that included corticosteroids to help manage his condition and speed up his recovery.

Doku’s use of this substance comes after he received a “therapeutic use exemption,” which is a procedure approved in anti-doping laws that allows athletes to take prohibited substances when there is a proven medical necessity, provided that no suitable alternative treatment is available and that the treatment does not confer any unfair competitive advantage.

Reports confirmed that the treatment was essential to help Doku overcome the health issue he faced, before he regained his fitness and returned to participate with the Belgian national team in the remainder of the tournament.

The Belgian national team had concluded its journey in the 2026 World Cup at the quarter-final stage after losing to Spain, while Doku was unable to score any goals or provide any assists during his participation in the tournament.
