An initiative to rehabilitate Wadi Al-Sulai in Riyadh with the participation of 200 volunteers

In a move reflecting the Saudi capital's commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and improving the urban landscape, the Riyadh Municipality, represented by the South Riyadh Municipality, implemented a unique volunteer initiative aimed at enhancing the environment in the southern part of Wadi Al-Sulai. This initiative comes in response to the increasing popularity of the newly developed area among residents and visitors, making its preservation a shared responsibility between government agencies and community members.

Details of the initiative and community participation

The event witnessed broad participation and remarkable community engagement, with 200 volunteers joining the Secretariat's efforts. Participants included 50 high school students, reflecting the educational institutions' commitment to instilling the values of volunteerism in young people, as well as a distinguished contribution from the Philippine "Green Saudi Arabia" initiative team, comprising 150 volunteers of various nationalities. This diversity in participation highlights the positive spirit of the residents and their active contribution to serving the local community.

Tangible results and awareness efforts

The volunteers' field efforts resulted in the removal of approximately 9 tons of waste, directly contributing to improving the valley's overall appearance and preparing it to welcome visitors. The initiative was not limited to cleaning alone; it also included awareness activities targeting valley visitors, focusing on:

  • The importance of preserving natural resources and public facilities.
  • Promoting positive behaviors in dealing with waste in wilderness parks.
  • Raising environmental awareness to ensure the sustainability of green areas.

Wadi Al-Sulai: A new lung for Riyadh

Wadi Al-Sulai holds significant strategic and geographical importance for Riyadh, as it is one of the most important natural flood channels that run through the capital. Authorities are working on comprehensive development plans to transform the wadi into a recreational and environmental hub, contributing to an increase in per capita green space. Attention is being given to its southern section to provide a natural haven for residents of neighboring districts, thus enhancing the quality of life in the southern part of the capital.

Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030

This initiative falls within a broader framework that aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program and the Green Saudi Arabia Initiative. These programs aim to increase volunteerism in the Kingdom to one million volunteers, in addition to protecting vegetation and the natural environment. Through these events, the Riyadh Municipality reaffirms its commitment to supporting sustainable urban development and building a balanced environment that serves current and future generations.
