Saudi Arabia weather: Sub-zero cold wave hits the northern borders

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued Northern Borders by a cold air wave that will lead to a significant and sharp drop in temperatures.

The center explained in its official report that this weather condition will begin to have its actual effects on next Wednesday and Thursday, as the region is expected to witness a decrease in minimum temperatures ranging between (3) degrees Celsius and reaching (1) degree Celsius below zero, which calls for taking precautions.

The climatic context and nature of the atmosphere in the northern regions

This cold wave is part of the typical winter weather patterns in the Northern Borders region. Geographically, this area is close to climatic influences from the Levant and the Mediterranean basin, making it more susceptible to cold polar air masses than other parts of the Kingdom. Cities like Tarif, Arar, and Rafha are historically among the areas that record the lowest temperatures in the Kingdom, reaching or dropping below freezing at the height of winter.

The importance of warnings and public safety measures

This warning is particularly important given the potential impact of frost and extreme cold on daily life and public health. As temperatures drop below freezing, reliance on various heating methods increases, whether electric or those based on coal and wood. In this context, relevant authorities consistently emphasize, in conjunction with weather reports, the necessity of following safety guidelines to avoid suffocation or fires that may result from the misuse of heating appliances indoors.

This drop in temperatures also affects drivers and highway users, as frost may form in the early morning hours, requiring careful driving. Furthermore, citizens and residents, especially the elderly and children, are advised to wear warm winter clothing to reduce the chances of catching colds and other seasonal illnesses associated with the sharp weather changes.

A call to adhere to official guidelines

In closing its report, the National Center for Meteorology reiterated its call for everyone to follow the daily reports and weather updates through official channels, and to fully comply with the instructions of the competent authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property during the period of impact of this cold wave.
