Pakistani police kill 14 terrorists in security operations in Balochistan

Pakistani police announced on Wednesday that their forces had successfully eliminated 14 terrorists during two separate security operations based on accurate intelligence in the southwestern province of Balochistan, which is experiencing escalating security tensions.

Details of the first operation in Quetta

High-ranking security sources reported that the first operation took place in the outskirts of Quetta, the provincial capital, where counter-terrorism forces raided a hideout of militants. A heavy exchange of fire resulted in the deaths of eight terrorists belonging to the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). During the intense clashes, three police officers sustained injuries of varying severity and were immediately transported to a hospital for treatment, where their condition was described as stable.

Targeting the Balochistan Liberation Army in Barkhan

In a separate but nearly simultaneous operation, security forces conducted a raid in the Barkhan area targeting members of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Police confirmed that the operation resulted in the deaths of six terrorists, with no casualties or injuries reported among the security forces involved.

The security context and escalating tensions

These operations come at a time when Pakistan is witnessing a marked escalation in armed attacks, particularly in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bordering Afghanistan. Since the end of the ceasefire between the Pakistani government and the Pakistani Taliban in late 2022, armed groups have intensified their attacks against security forces, police, and vital infrastructure.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest and least populated province, is a hotbed of separatist activity, including the Balochistan Liberation Army, which seeks independence for the resource-rich, gas-rich region, as well as religiously extremist groups. The region is of paramount strategic importance as it hosts major economic projects within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Weapons seized and the fight against terrorism continues

Security sources indicated that the forces successfully seized large quantities of weapons, ammunition, and explosives from the terrorists, thwarting potential sabotage plots. Pakistani authorities emphasized their determination to continue security operations and intensify intelligence efforts until the remnants of terrorism are completely eliminated and its roots are eradicated from the region, ensuring the country's stability and protecting its citizens.
