Jazan weather: Heavy rains and flash flood warnings in Saudi Arabia

The Jazan region, located in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, experienced moderate to heavy rainfall this evening, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. This weather system affected several governorates and districts, including Al-Ardah, Al-Hurth, Fifa, and Al-Dayer Bani Malik, as well as a number of their villages and towns, leading to the flow of wadis and streams.

Official warnings and weather details

The National Center for Meteorology issued an advanced warning earlier today, cautioning of continued heavy rainfall in the Jazan region. The center explained that this rainfall would be accompanied by strong winds, potentially leading to near-zero horizontal visibility. The center also warned of the risks of hail, flash floods, and thunderstorms. The warning covered the governorates of Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub, noting that the weather conditions were expected to persist until 9:00 PM.

The climatic context of the Jazan region

The Jazan region boasts unique climatic characteristics that distinguish it from most other parts of the Kingdom. While arid desert climate prevails across most of Saudi Arabia, the southwestern highlands, including Jazan and Asir, are influenced by monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean, resulting in regular summer rainfall. This subtropical climate makes the region a vital food basket for the Kingdom, supporting the cultivation of tropical fruits such as mangoes, figs, and papayas, as well as important strategic crops like the renowned Khawlani coffee.

The importance and expected effects of rainfall

These seasonal rains have a dual impact on the region. On the one hand, they are a blessing, replenishing groundwater reservoirs and dams, and providing essential water for agriculture, which sustains a large segment of the population, thus enhancing local food security and supporting farmers' livelihoods. On the other hand, the region's mountainous terrain makes it vulnerable to flash floods that can threaten lives and property. The Civil Defense Directorate and other relevant authorities typically raise their level of preparedness during this period, issuing continuous warnings to citizens and residents to stay away from wadis and floodplains and to follow safety guidelines to ensure their well-being.
