Trump and Putin: Will the Russian president attend the G20 summit in America?

Former US President Donald Trump raised questions about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would attend a future G20 summit if the United States were to host it, expressing doubt that his Russian counterpart would be present at this important international event. In remarks to reporters, Trump responded to a question about inviting Putin, saying, "Frankly, I doubt he'll come," while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of dialogue: "I think you should talk to everybody.".

Background of the G20 and Russia's participation

The G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation, comprising the world’s largest advanced and emerging economies, representing approximately 85% of global GDP and over 75% of global trade. Historically, Russia has been an active participant in these summits, which address pressing issues such as global financial stability, climate change, and sustainable development. However, its role has become a subject of considerable debate in international forums, particularly after its suspension from the G8 in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. Despite this, it retained its membership in the G20.

The impact of the war in Ukraine and the international arrest warrant

Moscow’s diplomatic isolation intensified significantly after it launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. This tension culminated in March 2023 when the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Putin on charges of alleged war crimes related to the deportation of Ukrainian children. This warrant severely restricted Putin’s ability to travel internationally, as states that are signatories to the Rome Statute of the ICC are theoretically obligated to arrest him should he enter their territory.

As a result, Putin personally missed several high-profile international summits, including the G20 summit in New Delhi, India in 2023, and the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa in the same year, sending his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, to represent Russia.

Importance and potential impacts

The question of whether Putin attends or not at a US-hosted summit is of immense geopolitical significance. His presence would pose a major diplomatic challenge for the host country and its Western allies, who have imposed extensive sanctions on Russia. It would raise questions about how to handle it and whether it would lead to direct confrontations or boycotts by some leaders. On the other hand, his absence would be seen as a continuation of Russia's international isolation and a confirmation of the impact of sanctions and legal proceedings. Although the United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court, hosting someone wanted by the court would generate considerable political and media controversy both domestically and internationally.
