Saudi Arabia strengthens maritime security to protect supply chains
The Kingdom plays a pivotal role in enhancing maritime security
Amid escalating geopolitical challenges, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia emphasized the importance of maintaining maritime operations and ensuring the protection of global energy supplies and supply chains. This came during the official statement delivered by the Kingdom's delegation participating in the 50th session of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Maritime Facilitation Committee. The Kingdom reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting and ensuring the safety of seafarers, citing document FAL 50/J/6, in response to the growing threats targeting maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas.
Strategic context and importance of waterways
These statements and positions are of paramount importance given the Kingdom's strategic geographic location, overlooking two of the world's most vital waterways: the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea are crucial arteries through which a significant portion of global oil and trade passes, and any disruption to these routes directly impacts the global economy. Therefore, Saudi Arabia has called for the adoption of proposals that enhance maritime safety, endorsing the Council's extraordinary declaration (D.36/ES/C), which strongly condemns any attacks that violate international law and threaten the security of maritime transport and global trade.
Saudi initiatives to protect regional and international supply chains
Building on its leading role, the Kingdom did not limit itself to diplomatic statements but took practical steps to ensure the continuity of operations. It activated logistical corridors through its Red Sea ports, connecting them to various modes of transport to guarantee the smooth flow of goods within the Kingdom and neighboring countries. In this context, the Saudi Ports Authority launched an urgent initiative to support ships affected by the ongoing events. This initiative included providing essential supplies such as fuel and provisions to stranded vessels, as well as facilitating crew changes. Within just 72 hours, the Kingdom successfully provided these vital services to a number of ships in the Gulf region.
Regulatory exceptions to support the maritime sector
In response to current circumstances that may disrupt routine procedures, the Public Transport Authority announced an exceptional initiative exempting vessels from the requirement to have valid certificates and documents necessary for issuing or renewing navigation licenses. This decision allows for a 30-day extension of operating licenses for maritime units, renewable for further periods, and applies to both Saudi and foreign vessels operating within the territorial waters of the Arabian Gulf. This step aims to support the continuity of maritime operations without compromising stringent safety requirements and marine environmental protection.
Expected impact on the global economy
Saudi Arabia's efforts extend beyond the domestic sphere, serving as a safeguard for the global economy. By securing energy supplies and facilitating trade, the Kingdom contributes to the stability of global markets and mitigates inflation and the risks of supply shortages. The Kingdom affirms its continued coordination and collaboration with its international partners to enhance maritime security and protect lives and property at sea, thus solidifying its position as a cornerstone of global security and the economy.
