The Speaker of the Shura Council in the Maldives: Parliamentary diplomacy enhances understanding

His Excellency the Speaker of the Saudi Shura Council, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Sheikh, is commencing an important official visit to the Republic of Maldives, leading a high-level delegation of council members. This visit comes in response to an official invitation extended to His Excellency by the Speaker of the Maldivian People's Assembly (Parliament), Mr. Abdul Raheem Abdullah. This diplomatic step aims to strengthen the robust fraternal ties between Riyadh and Malé and to open new avenues for joint cooperation in various political, economic, and cultural fields.

Saudi-Maldives relations are rooted in a deep historical legacy of religious and cultural ties, with formal diplomatic relations established in 1981. Since then, relations have witnessed remarkable development based on mutual respect and cooperation. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has emerged as a major supporter of development in the Maldives, particularly through projects funded by the Saudi Fund for Development in the infrastructure, health, and education sectors. The two countries are bound by ties of Islamic brotherhood and share similar perspectives on many regional and international issues, making this visit a natural continuation of a long history of bilateral understanding.

During his visit, the Speaker of the Shura Council is scheduled to hold an official meeting with his Maldivian counterpart, the Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, in addition to a series of meetings with several senior officials in the Republic of Maldives. In his remarks, Dr. Abdullah Al-Sheikh emphasized that this visit reflects the keenness of the leadership of both brotherly countries to strengthen coordination and ongoing consultation, serving the common interests of both peoples. He also highlighted the importance of the strong bonds of Islamic brotherhood that unite them.

The path of effective parliamentary and diplomatic relations

In a related context, the Speaker of the Shura Council highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in the modern era, emphasizing that it serves as an effective and vital bridge for fostering understanding and bringing viewpoints closer between nations. Parliamentary diplomacy complements official diplomacy, contributing to the support of areas of joint cooperation through the activation of parliamentary friendship committees and the exchange of legislative expertise. His Excellency expressed his strong confidence that this visit will provide a significant and renewed impetus to the parliamentary relations between the Saudi Shura Council and the Parliament of the Maldives.

This visit is of paramount importance at the local, regional, and international levels. Bilaterally, it is expected to contribute to strengthening trade and stimulating joint investments, particularly in light of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to expand international partnerships. Regionally and internationally, this parliamentary coordination will enhance the unification of positions in international forums, especially on issues of concern to the Muslim world, and on climate change, a challenge the Maldives is among the most affected by and committed to addressing in cooperation with the international community.

The Shura Council delegation accompanying His Excellency the Speaker includes a distinguished group of national experts: Their Excellencies and Highnesses, members of the Council: Dr. Mohammed bin Ali Mubarak, Engineer Mahdi bin Nasser Al-Dosari, Dr. Laila bint Abdulghaffar Fida, and Dr. Dalal bint Mohiuddin Namnaqani. The composition of this delegation reflects the diversity of expertise within the Shura Council, which will contribute to enriching the discussions and covering all potential areas of cooperation between the two brotherly countries.
