The Swiss president arrives in Jeddah to strengthen economic and diplomatic partnerships

In a move reflecting the depth of the long-standing bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Swiss Confederation, His Excellency President Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, arrived in Jeddah today on an official visit aimed at strengthening ties of joint cooperation in various fields.

His Excellency was received at King Abdulaziz International Airport by His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah Region, along with a number of senior officials, including the Mayor of Jeddah, Saleh bin Ali Al-Turki, the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the Swiss Confederation, Abdulrahman bin Arkan Al-Dawood, the Swiss Ambassador to the Kingdom, Yasmine Chatila, the Director of Makkah Region Police, Major General Saleh Al-Jabri, and the Director General of the Royal Protocol Office in Makkah Region, Ahmed Abdullah bin Thafir, which highlights the great importance that the Kingdom attaches to this visit.

Historical background of Saudi-Swiss relations

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Switzerland enjoy long-standing and deep-rooted diplomatic relations, officially established in 1956. Since then, these relations have evolved into a strong partnership built on mutual respect and shared interests. Switzerland, with its renowned diplomatic neutrality, plays a pivotal role in representing Saudi interests in Iran, as well as Iranian interests in the Kingdom, reflecting a high degree of political trust between the two countries. This visit is a continuation of a series of high-level meetings aimed at ongoing coordination on issues of common concern.

The importance of the visit and its expected impact

The Swiss president's visit holds strategic importance on both the economic and political fronts. Economically, Switzerland is a significant trading partner for the Kingdom, with trade encompassing vital sectors such as pharmaceuticals, precision instruments, luxury goods, and financial services. Discussions are expected to focus on exploring new investment opportunities within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, which opens up broad prospects for Swiss companies to contribute to economic diversification projects, particularly in the fields of advanced technology, renewable energy, tourism, and entertainment.

On the political front, the talks are likely to cover a number of regional and international issues, as both countries seek to coordinate their positions to enhance security and stability in the Middle East and the world. As active members of the G20 (Saudi Arabia as a permanent member and Switzerland as a regular guest), their coordination is particularly important in addressing global economic challenges.
