Ukrainian President departs Jeddah: Details of the visit and the Saudi role
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy departs Jeddah
His Excellency President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine departed Jeddah today following an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was seen off at King Abdulaziz International Airport by a number of senior officials, led by His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah Region. Also present at the farewell ceremony were His Excellency Saleh Al-Turki, Mayor of Jeddah; Major General Saleh Al-Jabri, Director of Makkah Region Police; His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Barakah, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Ukraine; His Excellency Anatoliy Petrenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Kingdom; and Mr. Ahmed Abdullah bin Thafir, Director General of the Royal Protocol Office in Makkah Region.
The general context and the Saudi role in the Ukrainian crisis
This visit comes within the framework of the ongoing diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, to find a peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. Historically, Riyadh has maintained a balanced stance since the outbreak of the conflict in early 2022, repeatedly offering its mediation to bridge the gap between Kyiv and Moscow. This role was clearly demonstrated when Jeddah hosted extensive international peace talks in August 2023, with the participation of national security advisors and representatives from more than 40 countries, aimed at discussing a framework for peace in Ukraine and establishing principles for ending the war.
Previous diplomatic successes of the Kingdom
Saudi Arabia's efforts extend beyond hosting summits and talks; they have also included achieving tangible humanitarian breakthroughs on the ground. In September 2022, the Crown Prince's mediation successfully brokered a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, which included the release of prisoners from various foreign countries. This success reinforced the Kingdom's position as a trusted international mediator with effective and open channels of communication with both sides, making visits by the Ukrainian leadership to Riyadh of paramount strategic importance in the pursuit of comprehensive peace.
The strategic importance and expected impact of the visit
At both the regional and international levels, the diplomatic moves between Kyiv and Riyadh carry profound implications. Locally and regionally, these meetings underscore the growing diplomatic influence of Saudi Arabia and its drive to play a pivotal role in resolving global conflicts, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to enhance the Kingdom's position as a global stabilizing force. Internationally, continued coordination with influential regional powers like Saudi Arabia provides Ukraine with a vital platform to present its vision for peace to the Global South and opens new avenues for cooperation in areas such as food security and mitigating the economic repercussions of the war, which has directly impacted global supply chains.
Prospects for bilateral cooperation and humanitarian support
Beyond political and security matters, these visits underscore the importance of bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Ukraine. Despite the challenges posed by the war, both countries are committed to continued consultation and coordination on various issues of mutual interest. The Kingdom provides ongoing humanitarian support to the Ukrainian people to alleviate the severe humanitarian consequences of the conflict, reflecting Riyadh's unwavering commitment to humanitarian values and supporting international stability. President Zelensky's departure from Jeddah today is not merely the conclusion of a protocol visit, but rather a link in a long chain of tireless diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom to promote peace and security in the world.
