وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية بأن مركز الزلزال كان على عمق 135.1 كيلومترًا، وعلى مسافة 43 كيلومترًا جنوب شرق بورت أولري.
وتقع جزيرة فانواتو وهي عبارة عن أرخبيل من أصل بركاني جنوب المحيط الهادي، على “حزام النار”، حيث تلتقي صفائح تكتونية، يؤدي احتكاك بعضها ببعض إلى نشاط زلزالي.
