King Salman Relief Center supports Syrian families in rural Damascus

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center continued its tireless efforts to support the Syrian people, distributing 1,026 complete food baskets in the Damascus countryside governorate. These baskets targeted the most vulnerable families and displaced persons, benefiting 1,026 families, totaling 6,156 individuals. This aid is part of a series of humanitarian and relief projects provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its humanitarian arm, to the Syrian people, aiming to alleviate their suffering and improve their living conditions.

Background to the humanitarian crisis in Syria

The urgent need for this aid stems from the protracted crisis in Syria since 2011, which has created one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. Years of conflict have devastated infrastructure and crippled the economic and agricultural sectors, leading to the displacement of millions. According to UN reports, millions of Syrians inside the country suffer from food insecurity and are heavily reliant on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. The Rif Dimashq governorate is among the hardest-hit areas, hosting large numbers of displaced people who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

The importance of aid and its direct impact

This food aid is of paramount importance at the local level, providing vital support to beneficiary families. Each food basket contains essential items such as rice, sugar, oil, flour, and other staples that ensure a family has access to nutritious meals for several weeks. This support not only helps combat hunger and malnutrition, particularly among children and women, but also alleviates the heavy financial burden on families struggling to make ends meet amidst rising prices and scarce resources. Furthermore, this intervention fosters a sense of solidarity and hope within affected communities.

The Kingdom's regional and international role

At both the regional and international levels, this initiative reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s leading role in humanitarian work. Since its establishment in 2015, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre has implemented hundreds of projects in dozens of countries around the world, with a particular focus on areas affected by crises and disasters. The continued flow of Saudi aid to Syria underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian principles and solidarity with affected populations, and it contributes to regional stability by helping meet the basic needs of the population, thereby reducing the drivers of irregular migration and social tensions. These efforts are coordinated with UN and international organizations to ensure that aid reaches those who need it effectively and transparently.
