Saudi Arabia weather today: Heavy rain in Jazan and Najran, and important warnings

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued important weather alerts on Monday regarding the expected weather conditions in the southern regions, specifically the Jazan and Najran regions, indicating the continuation of weather fluctuations ranging from heavy rain to active winds.

Weather in Jazan: Heavy rain and flash floods

The Jazan region has received advanced warnings from the center, with heavy rainfall expected, accompanied by severe weather phenomena. These include high-speed winds that could lead to near-zero horizontal visibility, as well as thunderstorms, hail, and a high probability of flash floods in valleys and ravines. The center also warned of high waves along the coastal areas.

The weather conditions in Jazan encompass most of the region's governorates, including Jazan city, and the governorates of Ahad Al Masarihah, Abu Arish, Al Tuwal, Samtah, Damad, Sabya, Baysh, and Al Darb. The effects also extend to mountainous and border areas such as Al Harth, Al Dayer, Al Aridhah, Al Aydabi, Fayfa, Haroub, and Al Reeth, reaching as far as Farasan Island and the Al Fatihah center. The center indicated that this rainy weather will continue until 6:00 PM today.

Najran region alerts

In contrast, the center issued a warning for the Najran region indicating the possibility of light rain, accompanied by active winds stirring up dust and sand, leading to reduced horizontal visibility, with a chance of thunderstorms. This weather pattern includes the city of Najran and the governorates of Badr Al-Janoub, Habuna, Thar, Yadma, and Khubash. This weather condition is expected to persist until 10:00 PM.

Climatic context and topographical influence

These weather fluctuations are part of the typical climatic patterns of the southern and southwestern regions of the Kingdom, where the rugged mountainous terrain of Jazan and Asir plays a pivotal role in lifting moist air and forming cumulonimbus clouds. These rains are of paramount importance to the region's agricultural sector, as Jazan is renowned for its fertile land and diverse crops. However, the heavy rainfall always necessitates caution from residents and visitors.

Weather forecast for the rest of the Kingdom

Nationally, the National Center for Meteorology's report indicated that the chances of thunderstorms (ranging from moderate to heavy) remain high across large parts of the Kingdom, including the regions of Asir, Al-Baha, Makkah, Riyadh, Al-Qassim, Hail, and the Eastern Province, accompanied by hail and strong winds. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain is expected in parts of Madinah, Tabuk, Al-Jawf, and the Northern Borders region.

Public safety guidelines

Given these weather conditions, the relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, stress the need to adhere to safety instructions, most importantly staying away from valleys and flood channels during rainfall, avoiding going to sea in coastal areas affected by high waves, and exercising caution while driving on highways and open roads due to low visibility caused by dust or heavy rain.
