At the expense of Zamalek, USM Alger are crowned Confederation Cup champions

Algerian club USM Alger won the African Confederation Cup title for the second time in its history, after defeating Egyptian club Zamalek 8-7 on penalties in the second leg of the final at Cairo International Stadium yesterday (Saturday).

USM Alger had won the first leg with a clean goal scored by Ahmed Khaldi in the 90+8 minute from a penalty kick.

Zamalek's early superiority

Zamalek entered the second leg pressing hard, and succeeded in obtaining a penalty kick, which was converted by the Palestinian striker Oday Dabbagh with a shot to the right of the goalkeeper of USM Alger in the fifth minute.

The "White Knight" continued its dominance in the opening minutes, scoring again in the 15th minute through Mohamed Ismail, but the referee disallowed the goal due to offside.

Algerian advantage in the second half

The second half saw an Algerian advantage, as USM Alger were more dangerous and wasted more than one opportunity to equalize.

Penalty kicks smile on USM Alger

The two teams resorted to penalty kicks, which smiled on the side of USM Alger, after Zamalek player Mohamed Shehata missed the eighth kick, giving the opportunity to Jaloudi Likonza, who succeeded in scoring the decisive kick, and leading the Algerian team to win the title.
