River Plate tops the list of clubs with the highest global attendance in 2024

Argentine club River Plate has cemented its place as one of the world's greatest sporting institutions, repeating its record-breaking performance in terms of global attendance for the third consecutive year. The club recorded its highest average attendance for a single match, reaching a record 85,018 fans, thus confirming that the passion of "Los Millonarios" supporters is unmatched by any other fanbase today.
In terms of numbers that reflect this superiority, River Plate has surpassed giant European clubs with historically large fan bases. It outperformed Borussia Dortmund, the German club known as the "Yellow Wall," which averaged 81,365 fans, as well as the Bavarian giant Bayern Munich, which recorded 75,000 fans. Even Real Madrid, the Spanish club with its immense global popularity, came in fourth place with an average attendance of 73,658 fans, highlighting the magnitude of the achievement of the Argentine club in an economic environment completely different from that of Europe.
This achievement takes on significant historical and strategic dimensions, as the iconic Monumental Stadium now boasts a capacity of 85,018 spectators following a series of renovations and upgrades over the past few months. These modernizations, which included removing the athletics track to bring the stands closer to the pitch, have made it the largest stadium in South America in terms of capacity, surpassing renowned venues in Brazil and Peru. A historical icon, the stadium previously hosted the 1978 FIFA World Cup final and continues to be the premier destination for major sporting events and international musical performances in Argentina.
Despite this overwhelming fan support and the artistic displays created by the supporters in the stands, this hasn't directly translated into the team's performance on the pitch this season. The team, under returning coach Marcelo Gallardo, failed to win any titles this year, creating a curious paradox: overwhelming institutional and fan success juxtaposed with a temporary dip in form. However, this hasn't diminished the continued fan momentum and the consistently sold-out matchdays.
River Plate's ambitions don't stop there; they are planning further ambitious development projects for the stadium. Future plans include constructing a full roof to cover the stands, as well as increasing the stadium's capacity to 100,000 fans—a figure that will make it extremely difficult for any club in the world to compete with River Plate in terms of attendance. Remarkably, all this work is being carried out while the team continues to play its matches at the same stadium without interruption, reflecting a high level of professionalism in managing the infrastructure.
