Saudi Arabia weather: Cold wave ends, heavy rain in the Eastern Province

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia, through weather analyst Aqeel Al-Aqeel, announced the end of the cold wave that dominated the Kingdom's atmosphere during the past days, confirming that the country has entered a transitional weather phase that paves the way for receiving a new rainy weather system whose effects will be directly concentrated on the Eastern Province.
Weather details and the end of the cold wave
In a press statement to Al-Youm newspaper, Al-Aqeel explained that the cold wave has officially ended according to the scientific standards and regulations adopted by the National Center for Meteorology. These standards stipulate that the cold air mass must remain in effect for at least five consecutive days to be classified as a cold wave, a condition that has been met. The cold wave has ended with the air mass adapting and the wind returning to its southerly and southwesterly paths, indicating a gradual rise in temperatures.
Rainfall map and affected areas
A weather analyst revealed that the current shifts in wind direction are a strong indicator of the onset of atmospheric instability, with varying intensities of rainfall expected in the Eastern Province. Al-Aqeel outlined the timeline and location of the expected weather event as follows:
- Friday evening: The direct effects of the rainy weather will begin in the northeastern parts, specifically the governorates of Al-Nairiyah and Hafr Al-Batin.
- Sunday: The weather system will expand to include the coastal areas of the eastern region, requiring caution.
- Monday morning: The weather fluctuations will begin to subside, and the weather will gradually return to stability and its normal levels.
Climate context and transition phase
These weather fluctuations are a natural occurrence in Saudi Arabia's climate during the transitional periods between seasons, when the region typically experiences low-pressure systems and changes in air masses. These rains are particularly important for the Eastern Province, as they contribute to irrigating vegetation and replenishing groundwater. However, they also necessitate a high level of preparedness from relevant authorities to manage potential water accumulation.
Important recommendations and warnings
The National Center of Meteorology stressed the need to follow the daily reports and early warnings issued through its official platforms, calling on citizens and residents to be cautious, especially in open areas and highways that may experience a decrease in horizontal visibility, in addition to staying away from places where torrents collect and low areas during rainfall to ensure everyone’s safety.
