Saudi Arabia's countryside: Farmers to earn 20,000 riyals monthly by 2030

In a move reflecting the ambitious goals of the agricultural sector in the Kingdom, the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Program, "Reef Saudi Arabia," unveiled its ambitious strategic targets, which anticipate raising the average monthly income of small farmers and producers benefiting from the program to more than 20,000 riyals per person by 2030. This announcement underscores the program's commitment to achieving significant improvements in the living standards of rural residents.

Strategic context within Vision 2030

This development cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader context of Saudi Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on diversifying income sources and enhancing food security. The "Reef Saudi Arabia" program is a cornerstone of this framework, aiming to transform the agricultural sector from a traditional model to a sustainable investment sector. This step is of paramount importance given the global challenges related to food supply chains, making support for local produce an indispensable strategic choice for ensuring economic and social stability in non-urban areas.

Pillars of growth and digital transformation

In elaborating on this transformation, Majid Al-Buraikan, the official spokesperson for the "Reef Saudi Arabia" program, explained that the escalating growth in farmers' incomes was not a coincidence, but rather the result of diligent work based on well-considered strategies. The program expanded its beneficiary base to exceed 200,000, with a focus on "model projects" that have made a tangible difference in productivity, with increases ranging from 40% to 250% across different sectors.

Al-Buraikan added that the introduction of modern technologies and agricultural mechanization has played a pivotal role in reducing operating costs by up to 25%, which has positively impacted farmers' net profits. This technological transformation not only increases income but also ensures the sustainability of natural resources and efficient water use, aligning with global environmental standards.

Upward trend in figures and income

In unequivocal terms, the program presented the growth trajectory of per capita income, starting at an average of 9,500 riyals in 2018. Implementation plans successfully raised this figure to 13,763 riyals by the end of 2024/2025, representing a remarkable increase of 45%. These figures strongly indicate the feasibility of achieving the 20,000 riyal target by 2030.

Economic and social impact

Transforming small producers into rural investors and entrepreneurs primarily aims to make rural life a competitive and attractive economic option compared to major cities. This approach will curb reverse migration to cities, create sustainable job opportunities for young men and women in their regions, promote balanced development across the Kingdom's various regions, and support non-oil GDP.
