Qassim weather: Warning of heavy rain and possible flash floods today

Advanced warning from the National Center for Meteorology

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced weather alert for the Qassim region, urging residents to take precautions. The forecast indicates moderate to heavy thunderstorms, increasing the likelihood of flash floods in valleys and ravines. The alert covers the city of Buraidah and several surrounding governorates and centers, including Unaizah, Al-Asyah, Al-Badai, Al-Bukayriyah, Ash-Shamasiyah, Al-Mudhnib, and Uyun Al-Jawa, as well as the Al-Thamiriya and Al-Ammar centers.

The center explained that this weather system will be accompanied by a number of severe weather phenomena, most notably strong surface winds that could reach high speeds, leading to a sharp decrease or near-zero visibility. The report also warned of heavy hail and the risk of thunderstorms, phenomena that necessitate staying indoors and only going out when absolutely necessary.

The climatic context of the Qassim region

The Qassim region lies in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula and is characterized by its generally arid desert climate. However, the region experiences seasonal weather fluctuations, particularly during the spring and autumn seasons (known locally as the Wasim season), when it is affected by low-pressure systems originating from the Mediterranean Sea or the Red Sea. The convergence of warm, humid air masses with cold air masses leads to atmospheric instability, which explains the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and heavy rainfall over short periods. While sometimes dangerous, this rainfall is a vital source for replenishing the groundwater reserves upon which agriculture in the region heavily depends.

Importance and expected effects of the weather conditions

These warnings are of paramount importance given the region's geography, where dry valleys can transform into raging torrents within minutes. Locally, the weather conditions are expected to affect traffic on main and secondary roads, necessitating cautious driving and avoidance of low-lying areas. These conditions also pose a risk to property and infrastructure if necessary precautions are not taken. Economically, Al-Qassim is considered the Kingdom's breadbasket, and any heavy rain accompanied by hail could damage agricultural crops, particularly date palm and open-field vegetable farms.

Calls to adhere to safety guidelines

The National Center of Meteorology, in cooperation with the General Directorate of Civil Defense, stressed the importance of following weather updates from official sources. It urged citizens and residents to stay away from valleys and flood channels, and to avoid low-lying areas and water accumulations. It also advised securing loose objects on rooftops and exercising caution while driving due to reduced visibility and rainfall, in order to protect lives and property.
