Iraqi players in the Saudi League: Haider, player number 15
A rich history of Iraqi players in Saudi stadiums
For over two decades, Saudi stadiums have witnessed the presence of numerous Iraqi players who have enriched local competitions and left a clear mark with various clubs. These appearances come amidst the significant development of the Saudi Professional League, which has become a globally attractive destination for top footballing talent. In this context, the name of Iraqi player Haider stands out as the 15th Iraqi star to have played professionally in the Kingdom, reflecting the continued strong Iraqi presence in one of Asia's most prestigious leagues.
Historical beginnings: The pioneer generation
The roots of this sporting presence can be traced back to the beginning of the new millennium, with the real breakthrough coming with the talented star Nashat Akram, who had his first professional experience with Al-Nasr Club in the 2003-2004 season. Akram's career did not stop there, as he moved to Al-Shabab Club and continued with them, achieving remarkable successes between 2004 and 2007. In the 2005-2006 season, Qusay Munir appeared wearing the jersey of Al-Hazm Club, followed later by the Iraqi attacking legend Younis Mahmoud, who defended the colors of Al-Ahli Club during the 2013-2014 season, which strengthened the confidence of Saudi clubs in the capabilities of Iraqi players.
Expansion of Iraqi professionalism
Over the years, Iraqi participation in the Saudi League has expanded significantly. Striker Amjad Radhi represented Al-Raed from 2014 to 2016. The 2015-2016 season saw an exceptional presence of several Iraqi players simultaneously, most notably the solid defender Salam Shaker with Al-Fateh, midfielder Saif Salman who played for Al-Ittihad and Hajer, and striker Marwan Hussein who wore the Al-Khaleej jersey. This strong presence contributed to raising the level of competition and highlighted the quality of Iraqi players and their ability to adapt to the Saudi league environment.
Continuous brilliance and tangible artistic impact
During the same period, star player Saad Abdul-Amir began his successful career in the Saudi League with Al-Qadisiyah (2015–2017), before making a significant move to Al-Ahli in the 2016–2017 season, and then representing Al-Shabab in the 2017–2018 season. That same season also saw the participation of international defender Ahmed Ibrahim with Al-Ettifaq, and player Alaa Mahawi with Al-Batin. These players provided a significant technical and tactical boost to their respective clubs, contributing to positive results domestically.
The current generation and a bright future
The Iraqi presence in Iraqi football has not diminished in recent years; rather, it has continued strongly, reflecting the deep sporting ties between the two countries. Defender Saad Natiq played for Abha FC from 2022 to 2024, followed by the talented Youssef Amin with Al-Wahda FC in the 2024-2025 season. This coincided with Ibrahim Bayesh's stint with Al-Riyadh FC from 2024 to 2026, before his departure during the winter transfer window. In the most recent season, Ali Jassim has been with Al-Najma FC since the 2025-2026 season, alongside Haider Abdul Karim, who began his career in 2026, thus confirming the continuation of this footballing legacy across generations.
Regional importance and influence
The presence of Iraqi players in the Saudi league is of paramount importance, extending far beyond the pitch. Domestically, Saudi clubs benefit from the fighting spirit and high skill level of Iraqi players. Regionally and internationally, their exposure to world-class coaches and international stars positively impacts the performance of the Iraqi national team (the Lions of Mesopotamia) in international and Asian competitions. This sporting partnership strengthens the development of Arab football in general and fosters sporting connections between fans in both countries.
