Barcelona officially complain to UEFA after being eliminated from the Champions League

In a move reflecting the growing frustration at Camp Nou, FC Barcelona has announced a new official complaint to UEFA. This complaint targets the refereeing team that officiated the team's two matches against their local rivals, Atlético Madrid, in the Champions League quarter-finals, which resulted in the Catalan club's elimination from the prestigious continental competition.

This crisis has once again highlighted the ongoing tensions between major clubs and refereeing decisions in European competitions. Historically, matches between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are among the fiercest in Europe, always characterized by tactical rivalry and intense physical challenges. Barcelona's elimination at this stage represents a significant blow to the club's sporting project, especially as they were counting on progressing in the Champions League to restore their European prestige, which has been shaken in recent years.

Barcelona were eliminated from the continental competition after losing 3-2 on aggregate over the two legs. In the first leg, the Catalan team suffered a heavy 2-0 defeat, and despite their strenuous efforts to come back in the second leg and winning 2-1, it wasn't enough to secure passage to the semi-finals. They left the continental stage amidst widespread anger over the refereeing decisions.

A previous complaint was rejected

This wasn't the first complaint of its kind in this encounter; President Joan Laporta's administration had already filed an urgent complaint immediately after the first leg. That complaint centered on a controversial incident where Barcelona players appealed for a clear penalty, but the referee ignored it and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) didn't intervene to correct the decision. Despite the club providing video evidence, UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decided to reject the complaint, deeming it inadmissible, which further inflamed the situation.

Barcelona escalates the situation with a strongly worded statement

In an official statement released by the Catalan club, they confirmed the escalation of the situation, stating: "FC Barcelona has lodged a complaint with UEFA regarding the refereeing performance in the Champions League quarter-final match against Atlético Madrid." The statement further explained the club's position: "The club believes that during both legs of the tie, several refereeing decisions were made that were not in accordance with the Laws of the Game, resulting from the incorrect application of the regulations and the failure of the VAR system to intervene appropriately in clear-cut cases.".

Severe financial and sporting impacts

In its statement, the club addressed the serious consequences of these errors, noting that "the accumulation of these mistakes had a direct impact on the course of the matches and the final result, causing significant sporting and financial damage to the club." This point is of paramount importance, as Barcelona is suffering from a severe economic crisis and was heavily reliant on the substantial financial rewards UEFA grants to clubs that advance to the later stages. Furthermore, the elimination jeopardizes the team's chances of participating in major international tournaments, which generate enormous profits, meaning the loss of millions of euros that would have significantly boosted the club's finances.

A call for reform of the arbitration system

In closing, Barcelona attempted to project an image of good faith despite the harsh criticism, stating: “Through this complaint, the club reiterates the requests it has previously made to UEFA, and at the same time offers its cooperation with the organization with the aim of improving the refereeing system to ensure a more rigorous, fair, and transparent application of the Laws of the Game.” This move reflects the club’s desire to push for fundamental changes in the European refereeing system and video technology, to prevent the recurrence of such scenarios that compromise the fairness of competition in the future.
