Legal analysis: Al Ahly's statement weakens the coach's and players' claims
The Saudi Professional League is witnessing considerable excitement not only on the pitch but also in the post-match media statements. Amidst the recent refereeing controversy surrounding one of Al-Ahli's matches, angry statements emerged from the team's manager and some players, sharply criticizing the refereeing decisions and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. However, the official statement issued by Al-Ahli's management charted a completely different course, attracting the attention of legal experts and sports observers.
In this context, legal advisor Saud Al-Rumman revealed in an exclusive statement to Okaz newspaper important legal and institutional dimensions of Al-Ahli Club's recent statement. Al-Rumman explained that the Al-Ahli administration chose not to endorse or support the emotional statements made by the coach and players, and made no mention whatsoever of the accusations leveled against the integrity of the competition or the refereeing committees. Instead, the administration limited itself to a formal and legal request to review the video assistant referee (VAR) recordings and communications. Al-Rumman considered this step to reflect a more balanced and professional approach to dealing with crises and sensitive situations.
The legal advisor added that this official statement reflects Al-Ahli Club's management's wisdom and restraint, and its avoidance of being drawn into the media frenzy sparked by anger. According to Al-Rumman, this institutional stance weakens the legal and reputational standing of the coach's and players' statements, and significantly diminishes the credibility of what was reported in the media. Large clubs are managed through official documents and correspondence, not through impulsive reactions that could subject their members to disciplinary sanctions from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation's committees.
Historically, since the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Saudi stadiums, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation has been keen to establish the principle of transparency, allowing clubs to request access to referees' discussions in controversial cases, in accordance with specific regulations and procedures. This measure aims to protect the rights of clubs without compromising the integrity of the tournament. The lack of institutional support from Al-Ahli's management for their players' accusations raises questions about the accuracy of those statements and confirms that the management is seeking the truth only through official channels, which positively reflects on the club's influence in the sporting public.
Al-Rumman concluded his analysis by emphasizing that official club positions are the primary and sole reference point for evaluating such sensitive issues. He stressed that the clear discrepancy between individual statements (players' and coaches' comments) and the official stance (club statements) reshapes the sporting landscape and reduces the momentum of circulating accusations that could damage the reputation of the competition. Ultimately, this event demonstrates the importance of institutional work within Saudi clubs, in line with the significant development of Saudi sports and the global standing achieved by the Roshan League, where professionalism in media and legal management has become an indispensable necessity.
