Saudi Arabia's digital economy: A massive growth of $139 billion

The digital economy in Saudi Arabia is experiencing tremendous growth

The Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), Engineer Haitham Al-Ohali, announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant leap in its digital economy, which has reached approximately $139 billion, representing nearly 15% of the GDP. This statement was made during the Kingdom's delegation's participation in the 2026 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council meetings held in Geneva. He emphasized that these achievements are a direct reflection of the major transformations launched by Saudi Vision 2030.

Vision 2030: The primary driver of digital transformation

Saudi Vision 2030, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2016, is an ambitious roadmap aimed at diversifying the Saudi economy and reducing its dependence on oil. Digital transformation is a key pillar of this vision, with the Kingdom investing heavily in developing technological infrastructure, fostering innovation, and digitizing public and private services. This strategic direction aims not only to modernize the economy but also to build a vibrant society and a thriving, globally competitive economy, as evidenced by the figures released today.

Global performance indicators and advanced infrastructure

The Kingdom’s digital infrastructure has witnessed exceptional development. The average mobile internet speed has increased from 9.2 Mbps in 2017 to over 214 Mbps currently, placing Saudi Arabia among the top 10 countries globally in this indicator. Internet penetration has also jumped to nearly 100% of the population, up from 68%, reflecting efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure universal access to the digital world. These advancements have contributed to the Kingdom achieving first place globally in the Government Digital Readiness Index.

Women's empowerment and regional leadership

The achievements were not limited to the technological aspect alone, but extended to social and economic empowerment. Al-Awahli pointed to the increase in women's participation in the technology sector from 7% to 35%, the highest rate in the Middle East and North Africa region, and exceeding the averages of the G20 and the European Union. This growth reflects the Kingdom's commitment to strengthening the role of women as essential partners in the development process and digital transformation.

Strategic influence and international partnerships

The growth of the digital economy on this scale reinforces Saudi Arabia's position as a leading economic and technological powerhouse, both regionally and internationally. Domestically, it contributes to creating quality jobs for Saudi youth and improves the quality of services provided to citizens and residents. Regionally, it makes the Kingdom an attractive hub for global investments and technology companies. Internationally, the Kingdom continues its active partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to translate progress into initiatives with global impact, having launched initiatives to train more than 1,500 specialists from 190 countries, and an initiative to empower women leaders that has benefited more than 300 women from member states.

Future ambitions in artificial intelligence

The Kingdom is looking to the future with even greater ambitions, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. Al-Awahli explained that the Kingdom aims to build a computing capacity exceeding 6 gigawatts by 2030, leveraging its competitive advantages in abundant energy resources, investment opportunities, and its strategic location. This ambitious project aims to bridge the computing gap, serve developing countries and the world at large, and reaffirm the Kingdom's commitment to harnessing technology for sustainable development.
