A network of 62 tunnels enhances Makkah's infrastructure and keeps pace with global cities
The total number of tunnels in Makkah and the Holy Sites is about 62 tunnels, with lengths exceeding 36,300 linear meters, within an integrated network extension, which includes in its entirety more than 9,869 lighting units to enhance safety levels, 513 jet fans to improve air quality inside the tunnels, in addition to 326 surveillance cameras to monitor performance and real-time operation, 881 fire boxes for rapid response, in addition to 42 backup generators, and advanced systems including water pumps, fire extinguishing networks, smart sensors, and computer control systems, which ensures the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.
Smart technology system
The tunnel network also relies on an integrated smart technology system that includes digital operating and real-time monitoring systems, AI-powered solutions to enhance analysis and tracking efficiency, and smart sensors that contribute to rapid and accurate response to emergencies, thus improving traffic management efficiency and the safety of tunnel users.
The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, represented by the Holy Capital Municipality, put in place all plans and arrangements well in advance of the Hajj season to prepare and monitor the tunnel network in Makkah and the Holy Sites. This network significantly contributes to facilitating traffic flow and reducing congestion during the movement of pilgrims between the Grand Mosque and the Holy Sites.
The Municipality formed several specialized technical and engineering teams to monitor the readiness of the tunnels and the reception of pilgrims. These field teams conduct regular monitoring of electrical networks, lighting units, ventilation systems, alarm and fire suppression systems, and ensure the safety of all operational elements within the tunnels.

Operation and maintenance of the tunnel network
The Secretariat also oversees the operation and maintenance of the tunnel network through a comprehensive technical team comprising engineers, supervisors, and specialized technicians working around the clock to ensure operational efficiency and service continuity. This includes implementing several development projects related to maintenance and operation, keeping pace with the rapidly increasing number of pilgrims visiting the Grand Mosque.
The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, represented by the Holy Capital Secretariat, affirmed its commitment to utilizing all available resources and providing the highest levels of comfort and safety for pilgrims, reflecting the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' government's ongoing dedication to improving services for pilgrims at all times.
