First successful pediatric cardiac catheterization in Al-Qurayyat: A major medical achievement

In a groundbreaking achievement for healthcare services in the northern region of Saudi Arabia, a specialized medical team at Qurayyat General Hospital successfully performed the first interventional cardiac catheterization procedure on a child, marking a significant medical milestone for the Kingdom's healthcare sector. This success was not a coincidence, but rather the result of strategic collaboration between medical professionals from King Abdulaziz University, the Al-Jawf Health Cluster, and Qurayyat General Hospital, with support from active charitable organizations.

Medical background: What is interventional cardiac catheterization for children?

Pediatric interventional cardiac catheterization is an advanced and precise medical procedure, a modern alternative to traditional open surgery. This minimally invasive technique involves inserting a thin, flexible tube (catheter) through a peripheral artery, often in the groin, and carefully guiding it through the blood vessels to the heart. Through this catheter, doctors can diagnose and treat many congenital heart defects, such as valve stenosis (as in the child's case) or closing holes between the heart chambers, without the need for open-chest surgery and stopping the heart. This procedure reduces risks, speeds up recovery, and spares children the psychological and physical effects of major surgery.

Details of the achievement at Al-Qurayyat Hospital

A delicate procedure was performed on a young girl suffering from severe pulmonary stenosis, which was affecting blood flow from the heart to the lungs. Using interventional catheterization techniques, the medical team successfully widened the valve. The operation was a complete success, and the girl was transferred to the intensive care unit for monitoring. Her condition stabilized, and she began to recover under medical observation. The visiting medical team from King Abdulaziz University was led by Dr. Ahmed Saeed Azhar, a consultant pediatric cardiologist and interventional catheterization specialist, in collaboration with the local team at the Heart Center of Al-Qurayyat General Hospital, led by Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Ruwaili, and with the participation of Dr. Sami Mahjoub from the Military Hospital in Riyadh.

Localizing medical services to achieve Vision 2030

This achievement is of strategic importance as it aligns directly with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Program, which focus on improving quality of life and providing comprehensive and accessible healthcare for all across the Kingdom. Instead of patients and their families having to travel to major cities like Riyadh or Jeddah for specialized treatments, these advanced services are now offered locally. “Localizing treatment” alleviates the financial and psychological burden on families and ensures that patients receive the necessary care in a timely manner, thus enhancing recovery rates and improving overall health outcomes.

A successful model for community partnership

This success is a prime example of collaborative efforts between various sectors: academic, health, and charitable. This initiative is part of the 20th mission coordinated by the Felath Association in Makkah, in cooperation with the Qurayyat Medical Services Association. These integrated efforts have thus far served over 800 patients in the northern region (Qurayyat, Tabarjal, and Al-Jawf). This mission is the third of its kind in the Kingdom, specializing in pediatric interventional catheterization, reflecting an ongoing commitment to expanding access to advanced medical services to remote areas.
