Raids on illegal furniture factories in Jeddah to protect consumer health

Intensive monitoring campaign in Jeddah

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance compliance with regulations and protect consumers, the Jeddah Municipality, in cooperation with relevant security and regulatory authorities, conducted a joint field campaign that resulted in the raid and detection of three illegal sites (yards) located south of the city. The campaign revealed that these sites were being used as makeshift workshops for the reprocessing and recycling of used household furnishings using rudimentary and unregulated methods, posing a risk to public health and constituting a form of commercial fraud.

This step comes as part of a series of monitoring campaigns aimed at addressing negative phenomena and improving the urban landscape in Jeddah, in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to raise the quality of life and promote a safe and organized economic environment.

Details of the operation and observed violations

Yasser bin Siraj Bakhsh, Director General of the General Administration for Monitoring and Addressing Negative Phenomena, explained that field teams discovered workers operating these sites in violation of residency and labor regulations. These workers were collecting used foam and cotton waste, then processing it using rudimentary methods in an environment lacking even the most basic hygiene and safety standards. The processing included cutting, pressing, and packaging, preparing the materials for recycling and producing new-looking furniture that was later marketed and distributed to retail outlets, thus deceiving the end consumer.

The campaign resulted in the seizure of large quantities of furniture, with approximately (5,000) usable pieces being handed over to the competent authorities in accordance with the procedures followed, while the equipment and heavy machinery used in the illegal manufacturing operations were seized and confiscated.

The importance and general context of the procedure

These raids are of paramount importance on several levels. From a health perspective, these measures prevent the circulation of products that may be contaminated with bacteria, microbes, and insects due to the use of unsterilized materials, thus protecting consumers from potential illnesses. Economically, combating these illicit activities protects law-abiding businesses from unfair competition created by the informal economy and ensures that establishments adhere to established industry standards.

These campaigns reflect a firm governmental commitment to regulating markets and combating all forms of commercial fraud and labor violations, an integral part of the economic and structural reforms underway in the Kingdom. The cooperation and integration among various entities, such as the Zakat and Tax Authority, the Customs Authority, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Civil Defense, underscores the state's seriousness in enforcing regulations and protecting society.

Regular procedures taken

Based on the serious violations observed, the Southern Sub-Municipality has completely closed the three sites. The necessary legal procedures are currently being completed to apply the municipal penalties and fines against the violators, in addition to handing over the apprehended workers to the competent authorities to take legal action against them for violating residency and labor laws in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
