Saudi Arabia condemns Iranian attacks and affirms its right to respond

Saudi Arabia takes a firm stance against Iranian escalation

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterated its categorical condemnation and rejection of the Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom's territory, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and a number of other Arab, Islamic, and friendly nations. Riyadh emphasized that these hostile practices are unacceptable and unjustifiable under any circumstances, affirming that they constitute a flagrant violation of international norms and conventions.

Historical context and regional tensions

This firm Saudi stance comes against the backdrop of a long history of regional tensions fueled by Iranian policies in the Middle East. Over the past years, civilian infrastructure and vital oil facilities in the region have been subjected to numerous drone and ballistic missile attacks, most notably the 2019 attacks on Aramco facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais, in which international investigations confirmed the involvement of Iranian weapons. Despite recent diplomatic efforts, including the 2023 China-brokered agreement to restore diplomatic relations between Riyadh and Tehran, continued Iranian escalation jeopardizes the stability of the entire region.

Protecting Saudi national security and sovereignty

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed in its statement that the Kingdom reserves its full and legitimate right to take all necessary measures to ensure the protection of its national security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents. The statement clarified that targeting civilian infrastructure, airports, and oil facilities reflects a clear determination to threaten regional security and stability, which necessitates a deterrent response to protect national interests.

Refuting Iranian claims about the Kingdom's defensive role

In response to Iranian statements, the statement addressed the Iranian president's claim that there were no plans to attack neighboring countries. The Kingdom clarified that these statements completely contradict the reality on the ground, as Tehran has continued its aggression based on flimsy pretexts and baseless allegations. Among the most prominent of these allegations is the claim that fighter jets and refueling aircraft are taking off from the Kingdom to participate in offensive operations. Riyadh categorically refuted these claims, explaining that these aircraft are conducting purely defensive air patrol missions aimed at monitoring and protecting the airspace of the Kingdom and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries from the threat of Iranian missiles and drones.

International repercussions and Iran being the biggest loser

The impact of this escalation is not limited to the local or regional levels, but extends to the global economy. The Arabian Gulf region is the main artery of global energy supplies, and any threat to its security directly affects oil markets and international shipping. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement with a clear message that Tehran's continued escalation will have a significant impact on bilateral and future relations, emphasizing that the absence of wisdom and the preference for escalation will ultimately make Iran the biggest loser.
