In a strategic move reflecting the depth of the growing relations between Riyadh and Warsaw, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and His Excellency Radoslaw Sikorski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, signed today in the Polish capital, Warsaw, a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing a coordination council between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Poland.

This signing took place during the official visit of His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Poland, where the Council will be chaired by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries, with the participation of a number of officials from both sides, thus paving the way for a new phase of joint institutional work.

Objectives of the Saudi-Polish Coordination Council

The establishment of this Coordinating Council comes in response to the directives of the leadership in both countries and their continued commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation. The Council's primary objectives are:

  • Framing bilateral work within an institutional framework that ensures the sustainability of cooperation.
  • Intensify political consultation and ongoing coordination regarding regional and international issues of common interest.
  • Exploring and developing opportunities for cooperation in the economic, investment, and cultural fields.
  • Moving bilateral relations from the stage of traditional cooperation to the horizons of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Background of relations and their historical development

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Poland enjoy long-standing diplomatic relations spanning decades, with recent years witnessing significant diplomatic and economic activity. The Kingdom views Poland as one of the emerging economic powers within the European Union and an important gateway to the markets of Eastern and Central Europe. Conversely, Warsaw sees Riyadh as a pivotal strategic partner in the Middle East region and an influential member of the G20.

Relations have witnessed significant leaps, particularly in the energy sector, where Poland is a major importer of oil, in addition to cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food security, given Poland’s huge agricultural potential that aligns with the Kingdom’s food security strategies.

Economic and geopolitical importance

The establishment of the Coordination Council is of particular importance in light of current global geopolitical shifts. Economically, this council aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify international partnerships and attract high-quality investments. The council is expected to help remove obstacles for investors and increase the volume of trade, which has witnessed steady growth in recent years.

On the political front, the establishment of a permanent coordination platform, chaired by the two foreign ministers, will allow them to coordinate their positions more flexibly on complex regional and global issues, thereby strengthening international peace and security. This agreement underscores the Kingdom's commitment to its balanced foreign policy, which aims to build bridges of communication with various influential global powers.
