Exchanges of fire between Russia and Ukraine leave civilian casualties

In a new escalation of the ongoing conflict, authorities in both Ukraine and Russia reported civilian casualties from attacks carried out in areas far from the front lines. The strikes killed at least two people in Ukraine and one in Russia, and left several others wounded, underscoring once again the heavy toll civilians are paying in this war.

In detail, Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional administration, announced via Telegram that a Russian attack on the city of Dnipro, located in east-central Ukraine, killed two people and injured eight others, while one person remains missing. He explained that the strikes directly hit a residential building, a shop, and a car, causing significant damage. Dnipro is a vital industrial center, situated more than 100 kilometers from the front line, making its targeting evidence of the continuation of the Russian forces' long-range bombing strategy.

Background of the conflict and long-range attacks

This incident comes within the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war that erupted in full force in February 2022, which is an extension of the conflict that began in 2014. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, missile and drone attacks have become a key tactic for both sides, with Moscow frequently targeting energy infrastructure and urban centers in Ukraine, while Kyiv has intensified its drone attacks on military and industrial targets within Russian territory, including oil refineries and airports.

Casualties on the Russian side and the impact of the war

In contrast, Vyacheslav Fedorichev, the governor of Russia’s Samara region, reported one death in the city of Novokuybshevsk. He explained that the death was caused by “debris from a Ukrainian military drone that crashed onto the roof of a residential building.” These attacks deep inside Russia, while less frequent and smaller in scale than Russian attacks, carry significant symbolic and psychological weight, bringing the war into Russian territory and demonstrating Ukraine’s growing ability to reach distant targets.

The continued civilian casualties on both sides underscore the worsening humanitarian crisis. Negotiation and peace efforts have long been at an impasse, with each side blaming the other for the collapse of talks. With continued Western military support for Ukraine and Russia determined to achieve its objectives, the cycle of violence appears set to continue, further exacerbating the suffering of civilians living under the constant threat of bombardment.
