Developing the beekeeping sector in Al-Lith: A workshop to improve honey quality



In a strategic step aimed at developing sustainable agricultural practices, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate, in active partnership with the Beekeepers Association in the Makkah Region, launched a specialized awareness and training program aimed at raising the technical efficiency of local producers in the honey sector, in preparation for the new agricultural season.

Context of interest in the bee sector in the Kingdom

This field activity comes at a time when the beekeeping sector in Saudi Arabia is witnessing increasing government attention, given the high nutritional and economic value of honey, as well as its integral role in the cultural and agricultural heritage of the Arabian Peninsula. Through these initiatives, the Ministry seeks to align with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which focuses on achieving food security, supporting small farmers, and transforming traditional practices into a professional industry that contributes to the gross domestic product.

Details of the guidance program in Al-Lith

In response to the urgent need to empower beekeepers to manage their apiaries according to the latest scientific standards, a specialized workshop entitled “Technical Preparation of Bee Colonies Before the Season” was organized. The workshop focused on equipping participants with the necessary skills to deal with seasonal challenges and how to manage bee colonies with high efficiency to ensure continued production and minimize losses.

During the workshop, Mr. Ali Al-Qarni, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Beekeepers Association in the Makkah Region, presented a comprehensive set of advanced technical methods for preparing beehives. Mr. Al-Qarni revealed detailed protocols aimed at enhancing the immunity of bee colonies and ensuring their protection from pests and diseases that may become more prevalent with seasonal changes, emphasizing the importance of proactive intervention to safeguard bee populations.

The economic and environmental importance of Al-Lith Governorate

Al-Lith Governorate boasts a unique geographical and climatic environment that makes it ideal for beekeeping and the production of premium honey. Therefore, the technical discussions within the program focused on mechanisms to improve honey quality and increase production quantities in accordance with Saudi and international standards. Furthermore, fundamental and scientific solutions were proposed for the environmental and operational challenges facing beekeepers in the region, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources.

Government commitment to supporting sustainability

For his part, the director of the Ministry's office in Al-Lith Governorate, Engineer Yahya Al-Mahabi, emphasized that this outreach initiative is a fundamental pillar for ensuring the sustainability of the beekeeping sector in the region. Al-Mahabi affirmed the office's commitment to transferring the latest global technologies to local producers through strategic partnerships with specialized associations and experts in the field.

Al-Mahabi pointed out that raising the technical skills of beekeepers not only increases production but also directly and automatically improves the quality of the final product, thus enhancing the competitiveness of local honey in the markets and supporting the small economies of farmers and productive families. The ministry concluded by emphasizing its commitment to continuing extension programs across various agricultural sectors, striving to transform the agricultural sector into a vital and sustainable pillar of national food security.
