Two US soldiers missing during African Lion military exercises in Morocco

The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Moroccan military announced that two U.S. service members went missing Saturday evening during the African Lion international military exercises in southern Morocco. A large-scale search and rescue operation was immediately launched to locate them under challenging conditions.

According to official reports, the two soldiers went missing in a rugged coastal area near a rocky cliff in the vicinity of Cap Draa in the Tan-Tan region. Sources indicated that the incident occurred during joint training exercises, prompting the immediate mobilization of search and rescue teams from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the US Army, with the participation of forces from other countries involved in the exercise.

A joint statement confirmed that “Moroccan and American forces, along with forces from other countries participating in the exercise, immediately launched coordinated search and rescue operations, utilizing significant land, air, and sea resources.” AFRICOM also announced the opening of a formal investigation to uncover the circumstances of the incident and determine the reasons for the soldiers’ disappearance.

What are the “African Lion” maneuvers?

The African Lion military exercises are the largest US-led military training exercise on the African continent, hosted annually by the Kingdom of Morocco in partnership with other countries such as Tunisia, Senegal, and Ghana. First launched in 2002, these exercises have evolved into a major military event aimed at enhancing interoperability between US forces and those of partner nations in the region, and improving the ability to counter transnational threats.

The current iteration of the exercises involves forces from more than 40 countries, totaling approximately 5,000 military personnel. The drills encompass a wide range of scenarios, including land, sea, and air operations, humanitarian crisis response, counterterrorism operations, and cyber warfare training, reflecting the complex nature of contemporary security challenges.

The strategic importance of the maneuvers

The African Lion military exercises are of paramount strategic importance to the United States, Morocco, and the entire region. For Washington, these drills are a cornerstone of its strategy to bolster security and stability in North Africa and the Sahel, and to counter the influence of rival powers. They also reinforce the long-standing security partnership with Morocco, a major non-NATO ally.

For Morocco, the exercises represent an opportunity to enhance the efficiency of its armed forces and modernize their capabilities by working alongside the advanced US military. They also reinforce Morocco's role as a key player in maintaining regional security and send a strong message about its readiness to confront various security challenges. Regionally, these exercises contribute to building trust and strengthening cooperation among the region's militaries to address common threats such as terrorism and maritime piracy.
