Awareness campaign to promote drug safety during Hajj to protect pilgrims
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), in strategic collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has launched a large-scale international awareness campaign under the slogan “Your Medicine is Your Responsibility… Your Safety is a Priority.” This initiative coincides with the start of the Hajj season and aims primarily to promote the safe use of medicines and ensure the health and safety of pilgrims and Umrah performers from around the world.
Historical context and ongoing efforts to serve the guests of God
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance on the health of pilgrims, dedicating all its health and regulatory sectors to ensuring a Hajj season free of any health crises. Managing millions of people in a limited geographical area and within a short timeframe is one of the world's greatest health challenges. Therefore, relevant authorities, most notably the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, have consistently launched proactive initiatives each year to educate pilgrims before their arrival in the Holy Land, reflecting the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to providing the best possible healthcare and a safe environment for performing the rituals.
The three pillars of the Hajj drug safety campaign
This awareness campaign is being implemented across multilingual digital platforms to ensure the message reaches the largest possible segment of pilgrims, and is based on three main pillars:
- Raising awareness about the safety of medicines and how to store them: The campaign focuses on guiding pilgrims on how to store medicines correctly while traveling and moving between the holy sites, especially with the high temperatures that may affect the effectiveness of some vital medicines such as insulin.
- Basic First Aid: By introducing the contents of the first aid kit that the pilgrim should have, which includes painkillers, fever reducers, and materials for the care of minor wounds to deal with emergency situations.
- Regulatory procedures for controlled medicines: The campaign aims to facilitate procedures related to controlled medicines through a dedicated electronic system, ensuring the smooth entry of personal medicines for pilgrims in a legal and safe manner, while emphasizing the need to attach approved medical prescriptions.
Importance and expected impact at the local and international levels
The goals of this initiative extend beyond individual health awareness to achieve broad positive impacts. Locally, the campaign helps alleviate the burden on hospitals and health centers in Mecca and the Holy Sites by preventing medical complications resulting from the misuse or spoilage of medications. Regionally and internationally, this collaboration represents an extension of the implementation of the Riyadh Declaration, which aims to enhance integration and cooperation among national drug regulatory authorities in the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Towards a healthy and sustainable environment
In conclusion, activating this sustainable framework for cooperation in health security and cross-border initiatives is a crucial step towards unifying efforts to serve pilgrims. Translating awareness messages into a broad-based institutional initiative directly contributes to setting standards for international partnerships aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims, making their spiritual journey safer and more peaceful, and reflecting the honorable image of joint Islamic efforts.
