Saudi Arabia adds 271,000 healthcare practitioners and raises localization rates for 2024

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant milestone in its national transformation, recording exceptional growth in the size of its healthcare workforce, exceeding 42% in just four years. According to official statistics, the total number of healthcare practitioners jumped to over 931,000 in 2024, compared to approximately 660,000 in 2020, representing a substantial increase of 271,827 new professionals.

Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Program

These figures cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader context of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Health Sector Transformation Program, which aims to restructure the sector into a comprehensive, efficient, and sustainable healthcare system. This significant increase in the number of practitioners directly reflects the massive expansion of medical infrastructure and the opening of new medical cities and hospitals across the Kingdom, thereby strengthening national health security and improving the quality of life for citizens and residents.

Details of growth and localization rates in medical specialties

The data showed a positive variation in growth and localization rates across different disciplines, indicating careful strategic planning to bridge gaps in the healthcare labor market:

  • Physicians: This sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with the number of doctors reaching nearly 130,000, and a Saudization rate of 42%. This figure reflects the success of Saudi medical scholarship and fellowship programs in injecting qualified national talent into the heart of the healthcare system.
  • Dentistry: This specialty has led the localization scene with distinction, as the number of doctors has increased to more than 33,000, and Saudi talents constituted 58.1% of the total workforce, which confirms the attractiveness of this specialty to Saudi youth and the market's saturation with national talents.
  • Nursing: To keep pace with the expansion of facilities, the number of nursing staff has increased to more than 243,000 nurses. Due to the rapidly growing need, national talent has been combined with international expertise to meet the demand.
  • Pharmacy: The number of pharmacists has doubled to nearly 47,000, in parallel with a jump in the localization rate to 47.6%, reflecting the success of the decisions to localize the pharmacy sector and empower graduates.
  • Medical Support Services: This category achieved the most difficult number in the localization equation, as the number of workers increased to more than 222,000, of whom Saudis represent the vast majority with a sweeping percentage of 87.5%, making this sector the most prominent stronghold for national competencies.

Economic and social impact

This growth carries significant economic and social implications that extend far beyond mere figures. It signifies the creation of thousands of sustainable job opportunities for young Saudi men and women, and a reduction in reliance on foreign recruitment in critical specialties. Furthermore, this transformation underscores the readiness of the Saudi healthcare system to confront future challenges and potential pandemics, underpinned by a solid foundation of qualified personnel—a cornerstone of national health security.
