North Korea launches ballistic missiles after Maduro's arrest
In a new escalation of global tensions, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un directly linked his country's recent missile test to what he called the "latest geopolitical crisis," a clear reference to the United States' arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro . This military move, coming just two days after the incident that shook the international community, underscored Pyongyang's readiness to respond to any similar threats.
Political messages delivered via missile muzzles
Leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the launch of a new "advanced" hypersonic missile weapon system, North Korea's first launch in 2026. According to the official Korean Central News Agency, the maneuver was not a routine exercise but a strategic response to recent US moves.
Observers believe that linking the missile launches to Maduro's arrest reflects Pyongyang's long-standing and deep-seated fears of Washington's "regime change" policies. North Korea has consistently accused the United States of seeking to overthrow its government and views its nuclear arsenal and missile programs as its sole "insurance policy" for ensuring the regime's survival and deterring any external interference in its sovereign affairs. This explains the harshness of North Korean rhetoric, which described the incident as "an example of the rogue and brutal nature of the United States.".
Development of military and nuclear capabilities
During his supervision of the operation, Kim Jong Un asserted that significant and tangible progress had been made in preparing North Korea's nuclear forces for what he termed "real war." The use of hypersonic missiles, first tested last October, signifies a qualitative leap in Pyongyang's military capabilities. These missiles are characterized by their immense speed and maneuverability, making them extremely difficult for conventional air defense systems to intercept.
The agency did not specify the exact number of missiles launched, but confirmed that they hit precise targets in the Sea of Japan at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers, a distance that carries significant military implications for US bases and its allies in the region.
Sensitive timing amid diplomatic activity
This military escalation cannot be separated from the regional context surrounding the Korean Peninsula. The missile launches came just hours before a scheduled visit by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to Beijing, where he is set to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping .
This move carries a dual message: on the one hand, it is a warning to Washington, and on the other, a reminder to China and South Korea that Pyongyang remains a pivotal player that cannot be ignored in any security or political arrangements concerning the region. This missile test is expected to cast a shadow over the agenda of talks in Beijing, where the issues of inter-Korean relations and regional security will be paramount.
