The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center supports displaced people in Sudan with 1,300 cartons of dates
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center continued its tireless efforts to support the brotherly Sudanese people, distributing 1,300 cartons of dates to displaced and vulnerable families in the Kurmuk and Baw localities of Blue Nile State in the Republic of Sudan. This distribution benefited 6,977 individuals, in a move aimed at enhancing food security and alleviating humanitarian suffering in the region.
Background to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan
This aid comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. The conflict has displaced millions of people internally and forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in neighboring countries, creating one of the world's largest displacement crises. Like many other Sudanese states, Blue Nile State is under immense strain on its already limited resources due to hosting large numbers of displaced people fleeing conflict zones, particularly the capital, Khartoum. This situation has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and healthcare, making external humanitarian assistance essential for the survival of many.
The importance of the Kingdom's humanitarian role
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, established in 2015, is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s primary humanitarian arm and plays a pivotal role in coordinating and delivering Saudi aid internationally. Historically, the Kingdom has been a leading supporter of Sudan during various crises. This initiative is part of a series of relief projects implemented by the Center in Sudan, encompassing diverse sectors such as food, shelter, health, and water, specifically within the “Madad Initiative to Support Sudan 2026.” This underscores the Kingdom’s sustainable and long-term commitment to the stability of Sudan and the well-being of its people.
Local and regional impact of aid
At the local level, the distribution of dates provides a vital source of energy and calories for displaced families, especially for malnourished children, women, and the elderly. This aid directly contributes to alleviating the burden on families who have lost their livelihoods and sources of income. Regionally and internationally, these efforts reflect the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to its role as a key humanitarian actor in the region and underscore the importance of Arab solidarity in the face of crises. They also highlight the scale of the humanitarian disaster in Sudan and encourage other donors to increase their support to meet the growing needs of the Sudanese people.
