National values and their role in promoting tolerance and social cohesion
In a move aimed at consolidating the principles of constructive dialogue and strengthening social cohesion, the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue, in cooperation with the Saudi Journalists Association, organized a large-scale intellectual forum in Abha. The Asir Region Municipality Theater hosted this important event, titled “Civilizational Communication and its Impact on Strengthening Social Cohesion in Light of Cultural Changes,” with the participation of a select group of academics, intellectuals, media professionals, and those interested in public affairs.
General context and importance of national dialogue
This meeting is part of a series of initiatives led by the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue, which was established in 2003 as a leading platform for promoting a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and moderation in Saudi society. These efforts are of paramount importance given the major transformations underway in Saudi Arabia within the framework of Vision 2030, which prioritizes building a vibrant society with deeply rooted values. With cultural openness and rapid technological advancements, the need arises for in-depth discussions on how to adapt to these changes while preserving national identity and the authentic values that form the foundation of unity and stability.
Discussion topics and participants' recommendations
The media dialogue session was moderated by Taghreed Al-Alkami and featured active participation from prominent figures, including Dr. Issa Al-Mustanir, Director of the Saudi Journalists Association in the Asir region, who presented an in-depth media and social perspective. The discussion was further enriched by contributions from Dr. Adel Asiri, Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at King Khalid University, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Qarni, Director General of Corporate Communications at the Asir Region Development Authority. Participants emphasized that the concept of social cohesion is not merely a slogan, but an essential requirement for constructive human coexistence among diverse peoples and cultures, stressing the direct impact of a strong social fabric on achieving comprehensive development. Speakers underscored the pivotal role of authentic national values in establishing the concepts of mutual respect and intellectual tolerance, considering them the first line of defense against contemporary challenges and alien ideologies that could threaten societal stability.
Expected impact at the local and national levels
Organizing such intellectual events in various regions of the Kingdom, such as the culturally rich Asir region, directly contributes to building a collective awareness capable of adapting positively to new developments. At the local level, these gatherings strengthen ties between cultural elites and the community, opening new avenues for dialogue on pressing issues. At the national level, these discussions serve the state's strategic objectives of building a resilient and cohesive society, possessing the flexibility to keep pace with global changes without losing its cultural identity and deeply rooted values. In conclusion, the discussions emphasized the importance of developing clear and sustainable strategies to ensure the development of generations capable of carrying the torch of intercultural dialogue and contributing effectively to the march of progress and prosperity.
