Gabon dissolves national team and excludes Aubameyang after Africa Cup of Nations setback

In an unprecedented move that shook African football, Gabon's Minister of Sport, Simplice Désir Mamboula, announced a series of sweeping and drastic measures following his country's humiliating exit from the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. These measures went beyond simply holding the coaching staff accountable; they extended to the core of the national team and its most prominent historical players.

A bitter harvest and catastrophic losses

Gabon's farewell was anything but ordinary; it was accompanied by a lackluster performance and disappointing results that belied the progress of football on the African continent. The "Leopards" suffered three consecutive defeats, leaving them at the bottom of their group with zero points. Their ordeal began with a 1-0 loss to Cameroon, followed by a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Mozambique, before suffering the same fate against the formidable Ivory Coast, highlighting the team's defensive and offensive shortcomings.

To make matters worse, the absence of captain and star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the decisive final round due to injury raised many questions about the players' readiness and commitment.

The government guillotine: dissolution and exclusion

In a fiery press statement, Minister Mambola made no secret of his outrage, deeming the incident an affront to the nation's reputation. He stated, "Given the national team's disgraceful performance in the Africa Cup of Nations, and considering the numerous repercussions that directly contradict the values of morality and exemplary conduct advocated by the Republic, the government has decided to dissolve the coaching staff and suspend the national team's activities until further notice.".

The decisions didn't stop there; they included the permanent exclusion of two heavyweight players: veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga and global star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, in a clear indication of the government's desire to completely dismiss the current generation. The government also held the Gabonese Football Federation fully responsible for this sporting disaster.

A deep-rooted crisis and the risks of government intervention

These decisions highlight a deep crisis that has plagued Gabonese football for years, with the national team repeatedly suffering from administrative instability and disciplinary problems that have overshadowed its technical talent. Sports analysts point out that the government's decision to "suspend the national team's activities" could put Gabon on a direct collision course with FIFA, which strictly prohibits government interference in the affairs of national federations, potentially exposing the country to long-term international sanctions and further isolating it from the world of football.

The end of the Aubameyang era

For his part, Aubameyang did not remain silent, responding with a brief but telling statement: "The national team's problems run much deeper than my personal issues." This statement brings to mind a long history of tension between the player and the Gabonese Football Association, and confirms that the flaws in Gabonese football extend beyond the players' performance on the pitch to include poor planning and management, which ultimately led to this complete collapse at the continental tournament in Morocco.
