Heavy rains and flash floods in Medina: Weather warnings and details

The National Center for Meteorology issued an advanced warning today about the expected weather conditions in the Madinah , warning of severe weather fluctuations including heavy rainfall accompanied by multiple weather phenomena that may affect daily life and traffic in the region.

Weather details and affected areas

The center explained in its report that the weather system, which will begin at 2:00 AM and continue until 7:00 PM, will bring heavy rainfall to the governorates of Al-Ais, Badr, Al-Rais, and Yanbu . The report indicated that this rainfall will not be typical, but is expected to be accompanied by strong winds that may stir up dust and sand before the rain, in addition to near-zero horizontal visibility, hail, a high probability of flash floods in valleys and ravines, and strong thunderstorms.

In a related development, the alert also included forecasts of moderate rainfall in Medina and the governorates of Al-Ula, Khaybar, Al-Hanakiya, Al-Mahd, and Wadi Al-Fara ’ during the same period. This weather pattern will also be accompanied by strong surface winds and reduced visibility, necessitating caution while driving on the highways connecting these governorates.

Geographical context and the importance of warnings

These warnings are particularly important given the geographical nature of the Medina region, which is characterized by numerous large valleys and ravines that receive rainwater from the surrounding highlands. Historically, the area has been known to be prone to flash floods that can surprise hikers or those traveling on agricultural roads, making adherence to weather and civil defense warnings vital for protecting lives and property.

This weather pattern is part of the transitional weather system the Kingdom experiences, where the region is affected by low-pressure systems that contribute to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and rain. The National Center for Meteorology uses automated monitoring systems and satellites to track these conditions with high precision in order to issue early warnings, enabling relevant authorities such as Civil Defense and Traffic Police to take necessary precautions.

Safety and prevention guidelines

The National Center of Meteorology and relevant authorities have urged all citizens and residents to exercise caution and adhere to public safety guidelines. Experts emphasize the importance of the following in such circumstances:

  • Stay completely away from flood channels and valley bottoms, and do not risk crossing them no matter how low the water level is.
  • Avoid low-lying areas and water accumulations within cities.
  • Beware of lightning strikes and avoid using mobile phones in open areas during storms.
  • Follow weather forecasts and situation updates through official channels and verified meteorological and civil defense accounts.
