The battle for Asian spots in the Roshan League: A new opportunity for fifth place

The Asian Football Confederation announced significant structural changes to its club championships, which led to an increase in the share of Saudi clubs in continental participations. This decision has ignited competition in the Saudi Professional League, especially for fifth place, which now holds exceptional value and opens the door to new ambitions for several clubs.

Background to the decision and the advanced ranking of the Saudi League

This decision comes as part of a comprehensive restructuring of Asian club competitions starting with the 2024-2025 season, which saw the launch of three new tournaments: the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE), the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2), and the AFC Challenge Cup. The allocation of slots is based on the national associations' technical rankings, in which Saudi Arabia achieved a high position thanks to the outstanding performances of its clubs in recent years, most notably Al-Hilal, champions in 2021 and runners-up in 2022, in addition to the strong performances of other Saudi clubs. This success placed the Saudi league at the top of the West Asian club rankings, granting it a larger share of continental slots alongside Japan in East Asia.

The new seat allocation and its impact on local competition

Under the new system, Saudi Arabia will receive 6 continental slots, distributed to enhance the value of each position in the Roshan League standings. The distribution is as follows:

  • The first, second and third place winners: direct qualification to the group stage of the AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE), the strongest and most valuable tournament.
  • The teams in fourth and fifth place: qualified for the AFC Champions League qualifying play-offs, giving them a real chance to participate in the major tournament.
  • Sixth place: Direct qualification to the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL2), an important continental tournament that guarantees an external participation for the club.

This new distribution has transformed the mid-table battle into a fierce contest. Whereas previously the competition was largely confined to the top three, fifth place has now become a strategic objective for major clubs like Al-Ittihad, Al-Taawoun, and Al-Ettifaq, who see this as a golden opportunity to salvage their season and secure a continental spot. For Al-Ittihad in particular, this represents a chance to appease their fans after a disappointing exit from the current Champions League campaign and strive to return to the stage where they are historically a dominant force.

Regional and international importance of the decision

Regionally, the increased number of Saudi clubs enhances the prestige and strength of the Roshan League as one of the strongest leagues in Asia, intensifying competition with other major leagues. Internationally, this decision supports the ambitious sports project of Saudi Arabia and its Vision 2030. By attracting top international stars, the participation of more clubs in continental championships showcases the league's strength and depth to the world, confirming that investment has not been limited to the top clubs but has raised the overall competitive level of the league, making the remaining rounds of the Roshan League full of excitement and anticipation until the final whistle.
