Wakaa Center is an international reference center for equine disease testing, recognized by 33 countries

In a strategic move that enhances the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's standing on the international stage, the laboratory of the National Center for Plant Pest and Animal Disease Prevention and Control (Wiqa') in Riyadh has received broad international recognition from 33 countries, becoming an accredited reference center for equine disease testing. This recognition includes countries with significant influence in this field, such as the European Union member states, the United States, and Japan, along with several regional countries, representing global validation of the efficiency and reliability of Saudi laboratories' diagnostic capabilities.

Background of the achievement and its importance in the context of Vision 2030

This achievement is the culmination of intensive efforts within a comprehensive development plan that began in 2021 and is scheduled to continue until 2025. During this period, the center has worked to enhance the efficiency of its laboratories and implement the highest internationally recognized standards for equine health testing. This step is particularly significant given the Kingdom's strong focus on the equestrian sector, which not only represents a rich cultural and historical heritage but has also become a vital economic and tourism driver, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The Kingdom's hosting of major international events such as the Saudi Cup, the world's richest horse race, necessitates a top-tier veterinary and health infrastructure to ensure the safety of participating horses and facilitate their movement across borders.

Expected impacts at the local and international levels

Domestically, this recognition contributes to achieving national self-sufficiency in equine disease diagnosis and reduces reliance on external laboratories, thus saving time and costs for horse owners and race and event organizers. It also strengthens the Kingdom's biosecurity system by ensuring the accurate and rapid diagnosis and control of infectious diseases.

On the international level, this achievement represents a significant leap forward, as it will facilitate the movement of horses to and from the Kingdom for participation in international competitions or for breeding and trade purposes. Relying on the results of a locally accredited laboratory, particularly one recognized by the European Union, removes one of the most significant logistical and regulatory obstacles that exporters and importers previously faced. This reinforces the Kingdom's role as a leading regional center in animal health and veterinary medicine, and underscores its commitment to implementing global best practices, thereby strengthening the confidence of international partners in the Saudi health and regulatory system.
