The end of an epic journey: Ashley Young bids farewell to the pitch
Veteran English star Ashley Young has brought the curtain down on his remarkable 23-year football career, announcing his retirement at the age of 40. This decision, made after the end of his final season with Everton, concludes one of the most prominent chapters in the history of English football, characterized by prolific output, adaptability, and winning titles in two of Europe's top leagues.
In a heartfelt farewell message posted on his official Instagram account, Young expressed his feelings, saying: “From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road, then to Villa Park, Wembley, Old Trafford, San Siro, then back to Villa Park, then Goodison Park, and finally to Portman Road – what a journey I only dreamed of as a child! But every dream has an end.” He added, confirming: “Saturday’s match could be my last professional game after 23 years on the pitch.”.
A career full of achievements and challenges
Ashley Young began his journey at Watford's academy, where he caught the eye with his talent and exceptional speed as a winger, paving the way for his move to Aston Villa in 2007. At Villa Park, his talent exploded and he became one of the best wingers in the Premier League, making him a target for top clubs.
The highlight of his career was his move to Manchester United in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson. During his nine years at Old Trafford, Young transformed from a winger into a versatile full-back, demonstrating tactical flexibility that earned him the respect of managers and fans alike. With the Red Devils, Young won his most prestigious titles, including the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Europa League, and the Community Shield twice.
The Italian experience and the return to England
In a surprising move that demonstrated his unwavering ambition, Young transferred to Inter Milan in 2020, embarking on a new challenge in a different league. He made a significant impact, contributing to the team's Serie A title win in the 2020-2021 season, becoming one of the few English players to achieve this feat. Following his successful Italian stint, he returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa before concluding his career with Everton.
A legacy of professionalism and perseverance
Internationally, Ashley Young represented England in 39 matches and was a key member of the Three Lions squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Young's career, which saw him play over 750 official matches, is a shining example of professionalism and the ability to maintain his level at the highest level well into his forties. His retirement not only marks the end of a player's career but also the farewell to one of the icons of a golden generation in English football, a player who evolved and adapted to the changing game, leaving behind a rich legacy of titles and memories.
