Saudi date exports to South Africa jump by 48%
A new achievement for the Saudi date sector
The National Center for Palms and Dates announced a significant increase in the value of Saudi date exports to South Africa, registering a 48% growth last year compared to the previous year. This achievement is part of a series of successes the sector is achieving globally, underscoring its pivotal role in supporting the national economy and diversifying income sources, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Historical background and global standing
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a deep historical and cultural connection to palm trees and dates, with palm cultivation being an integral part of its heritage. Today, the Kingdom is one of the world's largest date producers, with more than 33 million palm trees producing over 1.5 million tons annually of various premium varieties. Dates are no longer merely a local agricultural product; they have become ambassadors for the Kingdom in global markets, reflecting the quality and competitiveness of Saudi agricultural production.
Supporting the national economy and achieving Vision 2030
The center explained that the total value of Saudi date exports to various countries worldwide reached SAR 1.938 billion, achieving a 14.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to boost its non-oil exports. The National Center for Palms and Dates plays a strategic role in this regard, implementing initiatives aimed at empowering exporters and facilitating access for Saudi dates and their processed products to more than 116 countries around the world, through improving quality and applying international food safety standards.
The importance of the South African market and its regional impact
The significant growth in exports to South Africa is a strong indicator of the success of the expansion strategy in promising markets. South Africa serves as a key gateway to the African continent, and this success opens up vast opportunities for Saudi producers and investors to target other African markets. This expansion also underscores the excellent reputation of Saudi dates for their high quality and nutritional value, further increasing demand in major retail sectors worldwide.
Economic impacts and future opportunities
This growth extends beyond financial figures, directly supporting local farmers and creating jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. With ongoing efforts to open new markets and develop date processing industries, the sector is expected to continue its significant contribution to GDP, strengthen the Kingdom's position as a key player in the global food market, and generate sustainable economic returns for investors in this vital sector.
