Jeddah University and UNESCO: Empowering AI talents with Vision 2030
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening its position as a leading center for technology and innovation, Jeddah University announced it will be organizing an introductory session for the international “AI Dictionary Challenge” competition, in collaboration with the International Centre for Research and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (ICAIRE), affiliated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This initiative is part of the university’s efforts to empower young national talents and equip them with the skills necessary to compete globally in one of the most important fields of the future.
The initiative's context is within the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This partnership is central to the Kingdom’s strategic directions, which aim to build a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy in line with the goals of Vision 2030. The Kingdom has given considerable attention to the artificial intelligence sector, establishing the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) as the national authority in this field. Initiatives such as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence” are accelerating digital transformation, encouraging research and development, and creating a stimulating environment for startups and specialized talent. Therefore, Jeddah University’s collaboration with a prestigious international organization like UNESCO represents a practical step towards aligning academic outcomes with global standards and ensuring that students keep pace with the latest technological and ethical developments.
The importance of the challenge and its expected impact
The “AI Dictionary Challenge” is more than just a technical competition; it carries significant strategic dimensions. The challenge aims to enrich Arabic scientific content in the field of artificial intelligence, bridging a major knowledge gap and contributing to the Arabization of modern sciences. It also focuses primarily on establishing ethical practices in the design and development of AI applications, a pressing global requirement to ensure these technologies are used for the benefit of humanity and to avoid potential risks.
Impact at different levels:
- Locally: The program contributes to honing the skills of students at Jeddah University and other Saudi universities, and preparing a generation of innovators capable of leading the technology sector in the Kingdom.
- Regionally: It strengthens the Kingdom’s role as a regional leader in artificial intelligence, and provides a model to be emulated in cooperation between academic institutions and international organizations for human capital development.
- Internationally: It puts Saudi talent on the global innovation map and underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to actively contributing to the global dialogue on the future and ethics of artificial intelligence.
The introductory session, organized by the university's Talent Acquisition and Development Department, reviewed the challenge's objectives and its various tracks, emphasizing the importance of active participation from students and other interested parties. These efforts are an integral part of the university's ongoing endeavors to raise technological awareness, support innovation, and enhance the presence of the Saudi academic community in leading international forums.
