Qatif Municipality's efforts: Removing waste and planting 73,000 trees

Rapid steps towards sustainable development

In its ongoing pursuit of sustainable development and a healthy environment, the Qatif Governorate Municipality announced the implementation of a wide range of development and service projects during the first quarter of the year. These efforts primarily aim to develop infrastructure andimprove the urban landscape of Qatif, positively impacting the quality of life for citizens and residents of the governorate and making it a more attractive urban destination.

National context: Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative

These accelerated steps complement the major national efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia within the framework of its Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program and the Saudi Green Initiative. Historically, the Qatif region has been known for its agricultural oases and rich environmental history spanning thousands of years, making afforestation and environmental rehabilitation projects a strategic step towards reviving this natural heritage and addressing modern environmental challenges such as desertification, visual pollution, and rising temperatures.

First quarter achievements: numbers and statistics

The municipality explained that the operational system achieved record and tangible results on the ground, including the following environmental and service aspects:

  • Vegetation cover: Maintenance of green spaces exceeding 1.3 million square meters, and planting of 73,097 trees and flowers throughout the governorate.
  • Infrastructure: Repairing 780 square meters of street potholes, applying sidewalk paint along 1,440 meters, and maintaining 2,305 lighting poles to improve traffic safety.
  • Addressing visual pollution: 410 square meters of graffiti were removed from walls, and construction and demolition debris amounting to approximately 14,521 cubic meters was removed.
  • Cleanliness and organization: Addressing the situation of 2,490 waste containers, removing 311 concrete diversions and barriers, taking down two illegal billboards, and dismantling an entire random site.

Facility safety and community impact

Regarding the safety of public facilities and infrastructure, the municipality added that it has upgraded 5,459 children's playgrounds to enhance their readiness and ensure the safety of their users. Furthermore, inspection teams conducted 4,655 thorough inspection tours, resulting in the issuance of 12,856 health certificates to guarantee that food and commercial establishments adhere to the highest public health standards.

Expected impact and future vision

The significance of this event extends beyond the local scope of Qatif Governorate, serving as a regional model for urban management and environmental sustainability. These projects directly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving public health, and attracting local and tourist investments by providing a clean and organized urban environment.

In this context, the Mayor of Qatif Governorate, Engineer Saleh Al-Qarni, affirmed that these achievements are the fruit of an operational approach based on integrated efforts and raising the level of field performance. He concluded his statement by noting the municipality's full commitment to continuing its development plans according to clear priorities, in line with the objectives of comprehensive development and achieving a more organized and sustainable urban environment for future generations.
