The Speaker of the Shura Council discusses parliamentary cooperation with the Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament

In a move reflecting the deepening diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Maldives, the Speaker of the Shura Council, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Sheikh, held an expanded official meeting today with the Speaker of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulrahim Abdullah, at the Shura Council headquarters in Riyadh. These talks are part of the Maldivian delegation's official visit to the Kingdom, which aims to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

The depth of historical and fraternal relations

This visit is of particular importance given the close historical and fraternal ties that bind the two brotherly countries, ties based on the firm foundations of Islamic brotherhood and joint cooperation in international forums. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a key strategic and developmental partner of the Republic of Maldives, having contributed for decades to supporting development and infrastructure projects in the Maldives. This underscores the importance of these parliamentary meetings in solidifying these efforts at the legislative level.

Details of the official talks

At the beginning of the session, the Speaker of the Shura Council welcomed his Maldivian counterpart and the accompanying delegation, reviewing the comprehensive and unprecedented development renaissance that the Kingdom is witnessing in various fields, which comes in fulfillment of the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister - may God protect them.

During the talks, the two sides discussed the working mechanisms of the Saudi Shura Council, with Dr. Al-Sheikh emphasizing the vital role that parliamentary diplomacy plays in bringing viewpoints closer and supporting political decisions, stressing the need to activate parliamentary friendship committees to expand areas of cooperation in a way that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples.

Maldivian praise for the Saudi role

For his part, the Speaker of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Maldives expressed his deep gratitude for the warm welcome and generous hospitality, affirming that this visit embodies the strength of bilateral relations. The Maldivian official commended the pivotal role played by the Kingdom as a leader of the Islamic world and a key partner of his country, praising the Kingdom's unwavering and continuous support in various economic and political circumstances, and its active contribution to the development and growth of the Maldives.

He also noted the great services and distinguished facilities provided by the Kingdom’s government to the guests of God, including pilgrims and Umrah performers, including pilgrims from the Maldives, in a manner that reflects its noble mission of serving Islam and Muslims.

Attendees and participants

The session was attended by high-level representatives from both sides. From the Saudi side, the attendees included the Vice President of the Council, Dr. Meshal bin Fahm Al-Sulami; the Assistant President of the Council, Dr. Hanan bint Abdulrahim Al-Ahmadi; and the Secretary-General of the Council, Mohammed bin Dakhel Al-Mutairi. Also participating were members of the Saudi-Maldivian Parliamentary Friendship Committee, headed by Abdulrahman Al-Harbi, and including Adel Mirdad, Iman Al-Jabreen, Hassan Al-Hazmi, Salem Al-Shahrani, Aisha Zakari, Othman Hakami, Mohammed Mubarak, Muaidah Al-Ghamdi, and Mahdi Al-Dosari.

On the Maldivian side, the following members of the People’s Assembly were present: Mohamed Shahid, Hussain Reza Adam, Ali Fusd, and Azim Abdul Aziz, in addition to the Secretary-General of the People’s Assembly, Fatima Newsha, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom, Ahmed Sarir.
