MG promotes sustainable transport with hybrid taxis in Saudi Arabia

In a strategic move aimed at accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation in Saudi Arabia, MG Modern, the authorized dealer for the MG brand in the Kingdom, announced a significant new partnership with Hafl Transportation Company, a leading transportation provider in the Saudi market. Under this agreement, the MG 8 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will be added to Hafl's taxi fleet in the city of Makkah.

General context: In line with the objectives of Vision 2030

This partnership comes at a crucial time as Saudi Arabia undergoes a comprehensive economic and environmental transformation under the umbrella of Vision 2030 and its ambitious initiatives, such as the Saudi Green Initiative. These initiatives aim to reduce carbon emissions, diversify energy sources, and build a more sustainable future. The transportation sector is a key pillar in achieving these goals, as the Kingdom seeks to increase the proportion of environmentally friendly vehicles on its roads and encourage investment in supporting infrastructure, such as electric charging stations.

This collaboration represents a practical application of these national trends, as it contributes to the introduction of new energy vehicles (NEVs) into a vital and influential sector such as public transport, reflecting the private sector’s commitment to supporting the national sustainability agenda.

Details of the partnership and its operational dimensions

The first phase of this partnership will include the delivery of 55 MG 8 PHEV vehicles, with another 75 to be added next month, bringing the total to 130. This rapid adoption of the technology reflects the growing confidence in the quality and efficiency of MG's electric drive systems and their ability to meet the demands of intensive operation in the taxi sector, particularly in the city of Makkah, which experiences constant traffic throughout the year.

The MG 8 PHEV is an ideal solution for this type of use, as its hybrid system combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor, providing a total driving range of up to 1,655 kilometers. This long range reduces "range anxiety" and ensures long-distance service, while also achieving significant fuel savings and a substantial reduction in harmful emissions compared to conventional cars.

The importance and expected impact of the partnership

Locally, this initiative is particularly significant as it is being launched in Mecca, contributing to a quieter and cleaner transportation experience for pilgrims, Umrah performers, and residents, and improving air quality in the central area. It also serves as a pioneering model that other transportation companies in various cities across the Kingdom can emulate.

Regionally, this move reinforces Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in adopting green transportation solutions in the Middle East and highlights its ability to integrate advanced technologies into its public services. Internationally, this partnership underscores the maturity and commercial viability of hybrid and electric vehicle technology, even in challenging operating environments, further solidifying MG’s global reputation as a key player in the new energy vehicle market.

Samir Kozum, CEO of Modern Giad Motors, stated: “We are proud of this partnership, which embodies our firm commitment to supporting the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 by providing sustainable mobility solutions. The adoption of MG 8 PHEV vehicles in the taxi fleet in Makkah proves that hybrid technology is truly ready for intensive use in our local environments.”
