Al-Bishi Goat Owners Forum in Makkah: Supporting livestock and Vision 2030
In a move reflecting the growing interest in livestock development in Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's office in Makkah, in cooperation with the supervising executive committee, organized the 10th Annual Gathering of Purebred Bisha Goat Owners at the Amq Center. This annual event underscores the significant position of this rare local breed and reinforces the Ministry's ongoing efforts to support breeders and develop the agricultural sector.
The importance of the Bishah goat and its place in popular heritage
The Bishah goat breed is one of the most famous and established livestock breeds in Saudi Arabia, distinguished by unique physical and genetic characteristics that make it highly sought after by breeders and collectors of rare breeds. This breed's importance stems not only from its high economic value but also from its integral role in the region's cultural and environmental heritage. Such gatherings help protect these breeds from extinction or uncontrolled crossbreeding, thus contributing to the preservation of the genetic heritage of local livestock that have proven their ability to adapt to the harsh climatic conditions of the Arabian Peninsula over the decades.
Forum activities and veterinary services
The tenth edition of the forum witnessed a remarkable turnout and broad participation from local residents, visitors, and prominent sheep breeders and those interested in the livestock sector from various regions. The event featured a showcase of top-quality local breeds, providing an ideal platform for exchanging experiences and knowledge between established and emerging breeders.
On the sidelines of the forum, the Livestock Unit at the Ministry's office in Mecca offered a comprehensive package of veterinary services, including free examinations for participating livestock and the provision of awareness and guidance programs. These efforts aim to raise health awareness among livestock breeders and strengthen preventative measures against epidemic and infectious diseases, thereby ensuring herd health and improving the quality of livestock production.
Economic and strategic dimensions of the forum
The Director of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's office in Makkah, Dr. Mohammed Al-Hutairshi, explained that organizing these gatherings is not merely for showcasing the industry, but rather a fundamental pillar for empowering livestock breeders to develop their businesses and transform them into a sustainable industry. He emphasized that these events contribute directly to supporting local food security by encouraging domestic red meat production and reducing reliance on imports.
Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
These initiatives are perfectly aligned with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on the environment, water, and agriculture sectors. Through the National Transformation Program, the Vision aims to improve the quality of life and support rural areas, as well as enhance the economic efficiency of the agricultural sector by adopting modern and sustainable practices. Supporting livestock breeders and preserving purebred animals is a pivotal step towards achieving self-sufficiency and sustainable rural development in the Kingdom.
