Health awareness campaign for pilgrims in Medina in 7 languages
As part of its extensive preparations for the Hajj season, the Madinah Health Cluster announced the launch of a comprehensive health awareness campaign targeting pilgrims arriving in Madinah before their departure to the holy sites. This initiative, which falls within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims, aims to raise health awareness and enable pilgrims to perform their rituals in good health and safety.
General context: Historical efforts to serve the pilgrims
Since its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed paramount importance on serving pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah, and healthcare is an integral part of this comprehensive system. With the increasing number of pilgrims annually from around the world, health strategies have evolved from simply providing treatment to a strong focus on preventative medicine and proactive health awareness. The Hajj season, the largest annual human gathering in the world, presents unique health challenges that necessitate meticulous planning to address infectious diseases, manage emergencies, and prevent illnesses associated with hot weather and strenuous physical activity.
Campaign details: Comprehensive access and advanced technology
The health cluster explained that the campaign relies on disseminating its awareness messages via 106 electronic screens distributed in strategic and vital locations frequented by large numbers of pilgrims. To ensure the messages reach the widest possible audience of pilgrims from diverse nationalities, the content is broadcast in seven major international languages. Targeted locations include hotels, accommodations, health centers, and land and sea ports, in addition to an intensified digital presence through social media platforms and official websites.
The campaign's main health themes:
- Preventing heat stress: Guidelines on how to avoid sunstroke and heat stress by drinking enough fluids, using umbrellas, and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak times.
- Food and water safety: Raising awareness of the importance of ensuring the cleanliness of food and drink sources to prevent food poisoning and intestinal diseases.
- Infection control: Emphasize the importance of personal hygiene, regular handwashing, and following cough and sneeze etiquette to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases.
- Dealing with chronic diseases: Providing advice to pilgrims suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, on how to manage their health conditions while performing the rituals.
- Public safety: Warning against the dangers of overcrowding and falls, and providing guidance on basic first aid.
Importance and expected impact
This campaign is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally, it enhances the preparedness of the healthcare sector in Madinah and highlights its pivotal role in serving pilgrims. Internationally, it reflects the Kingdom's commitment to the highest global healthcare standards and contributes to protecting global public health by preventing the spread of epidemics. Equipping pilgrims with the necessary health knowledge not only helps them complete their pilgrimage safely but also ensures their healthy return home, thus reducing the likelihood of any cross-border transmission of infections. This initiative is part of a comprehensive system of services provided by the Kingdom to the guests of God, in line with the objectives of Vision 2030 to improve the Hajj and Umrah experience.
